Luke 19:37-40
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

New International Version (NIV)
The ground speaks! All parts of creation, even inanimate stones, have a voice, and they use that voice to praise the Lord. As Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” From galaxies to molecules and from rocks to humans, every created thing was created by God, designed with the purpose of glorifying God. The universe was made to worship. And with the exception of humans, not one part of it has ever missed a beat. Because creation views worship not as a chore or an obligation, but as the culmination of their calling and the accomplishment of all things good. The stones beneath our feat cry out in worship day by day.
But their voice is not one we can hear. And no, technically they don’t have a mind like ours. And yet they still worship by obedience. Day by day, they are perfectly aligned with the Lord’s will and move according to the exact purpose for which the Lord created them. And that purpose boils down to the same thing across all creation: to imitate and proclaim the glory of God. In fact, Paul tells us in Romans 1 that the universe obeys that purpose so well that we have no excuse for not recognizing God’s glory! Look at the beautiful grandeur of stars, or the meticulous peacefulness of flowers, or the awesome terror of hurricanes, or even the consistent orderliness of mathematics. The characteristics of creation reflect and proclaim the characteristics of its creator.
And so it should be for us! We are God’s creation, we are made for worship, and better yet, he is worthy of our worship. So our every move should be to imitate and proclaim the glory of God. Everything we do, and everything about us, should reflect every side of God’s own goodness, so much so that others are able to know what God is like through us. Such is our calling and design. If we don’t worship, then as Jesus tells the Pharisees, even the stones will eagerly do it in our place. But we have a wonderful opportunity to worship with so much more power, clarity, and loving genuineness than the rest of creation ever will. So do not be silent; join with all creation and worship with all your might!
Pray with me:
Lord Jesus, you are worthy of all our worship and praise. As we learn from your great created handiwork, there is no greater good that we can do than to worship you. Thank you for showing us your glory through the universe; teach us to join in the song. You are worthy, and we pray in the power of your name, Amen.
As Pastor Brooks walks us through the book of Acts, we also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. The weekend devotionals from Ethan will be from that week's passages in our reading plan. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
