From the Chair
Patrick Dowling, Chair
Welcome to In Sum…, the official newsletter of the Miami University Department of Mathematics. Here we will announce and annotate the achievements and activity of the faculty, students and staff associated with the Department of Mathematics.
For our alumni, we hope this brings back a feeling of nostalgia and pride. We would love to help you celebrate successes, advertise new programs, or simply hear where degree in mathematics from Miami University has taken you.

Leah Simon
Math major Leah Simon wins Provost Student Academic Achievement Award
Lean Simon is a double major in Mathematics and Integrated Mathematics with a minor in Oboe Performance. She plans to graduate in December 2017 with hopes of teaching secondary mathematics after graduation.
While taking up to 21 credit hours per semester, she still found time to volunteer in high school classrooms, be an active member of the Miami University Council of Teachers of Mathematics, work within the Girl Scout organization, and perform with our University Wind Ensemble.

Miami meets MoMath
Alumna Gabby Trojanowski ’14 has joined the MoMath team at the National Museum of Mathematics.
As a MoMath Educator, she is using her dual major in Mathematics and Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics Education to plan Math Exploration experiences for museum-goers and school groups.
Welcome new faculty!
Three new assistant professors will join the faculty in 2017. We are excited to welcome Wayne Nirode (mathematics education), Jason Gaddis (Algebra), and Alim Sukhtayev (Applied Mathematics).
Two new faculty members are already on campus since 2016:
  • Trevor Wilson joined us in 2015 from Berkeley and works in the field of Set Theory.
  • Ebrahim Sarabi joins us from Wayne State University (2016) and works in the field of variational analysis and its applications in optimization.
