Four Simple Rules as the Class of 2017 Embarks on a New Adventure
Dear CAS Alumni and Friends:
Earlier this month, we celebrated the accomplishments of 1,367 bachelor’s graduates and 167 Master’s graduates of the College of Arts and Science's class of 2017. Among them:
  • 58 graduates received two or more degrees, including for the first time 9 students who earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree through our Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Program.
  • 376 graduated with distinction or honors.
  • 124 graduated with University honors and 85 with departmental honors.
  • 331 graduated with Latin honors.
Also among these graduates, the CAS class of 2017 includes:
We were honored to have Kim Lubel (Miami '86), president/CEO of CST Brands, Inc, as our guest speaker. Kim drew from her rich and fascinating experiences in law and business to offer the graduates her four simple rules as guideposts going forward:
  1. Be kind
  2. Have fun
  3. Be brave
  4. Be the best
Please be sure to watch (or read) Kim's full speech -- it was warm, heartfelt, modest, and pertinent to the numerous challenges and opportunities awaiting these young graduates as they establish their exciting new lives. And it provides an interesting context as Miami readies to welcome the incoming Class of 2021, our most diverse class to date.
Thank you for all the support you've given us this past year, and I wish you a safe and enjoyable summer!

Humanities and social sciences make a strong showing at Miami's 2017 Undergraduate Research Forum

2017 Undergraduate Research Forum
For many, the term “research” often connotes images of chemistry labs, biology specimens, and physics experiments -- but students in the humanities and social sciences demonstrated the significance of their own research as well at Miami’s annual Undergraduate Research Forum on April 26.
Humanities majors Claire Stemen (creative writing & interactive media studies), Graham von Carlowitz (German), Mayu Nakano (creative writing & Japanese), and Marissa Lane (creative writing & English literature) along with social sciences majors Brandi McConahay (anthropology), Wil Hughes (speech pathology & audiology), Netanya Lane (political science), Caleb Lovell (political science), and Virginia Hollatz (psychology) discuss their research projects and long-term plans.
