Psalm 123:1-2
I lift up my eyes to you,
to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he shows us his mercy.

New International Version (NIV)
Watching the sun set over the Cumberland mountains in East Tennessee, I stood on the front stairs of a church my Great Great Great Grandfather Levi Brooks planted.  There it occurred to me that in the 1870’s he watched the same sun set over the same mountains and worshiped the same God who made them all.  It was an epiphany for me.

It is easy in our turbulent world to look down in dismay at what the world has come to.  Our Christian ancestors showed us a better way:  they lifted their eyes in delight to the God who has come into the world.

The Psalmist lifted his eyes beyond the mountains (Psalm 121:1) to the Maker of the mountains, the King enthroned in heaven.  He looked to the Lord as a servant looks to his master  waiting for mercy.  Look up to God today.  Your redemption draws near.
Pray with me the words of the hymn:
“Our faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior Divine.  Now hear us when  we pray, Take all our guilt away.  Oh may we from this day be wholly Thine.”  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
