Not On My Watch: Performing Aquatic Quick Checks

As aquatic professionals, you know that there's a lot of training, education and skill that goes into keeping pools and natural bodies of water safe. It's important to regularly check that this training and education is being practiced on your pool decks 100% of the time.

Our Aquatics Quick Check cards offer a short, 10-question checklist around the foundational practices of aquatic safety and does not require any aquatics expertise to complete. They are designed to promote a culture where everyone—from leadership to guests—are empowered to identify that these practices are happening, and to speak up if they see anything that concerns them.

What is the purpose of the Aquatics Quick Check card?
Identify that foundational aquatic practices are happening at all times and quickly address any gaps to prevent them from escalating into a serious incident.
Who should complete an Aquatics Quick Check?
Anyone at your organization can complete these cards to hold your aquatics programming accountable. Leadership, aquatics staff and guests should all have access to these cards.
How often should we complete these Quick Checks?
We recommend aquatics directors complete these quick checks daily, but at different times of the day. For organizational leadership, this is a great opportunity to be present and interact with staff more often. As for guests, have these cards available for them to complete whenever they are on the pool deck.
What should we do if someone checks "No" on the card?
Leadership will want to address this immediately, in the moment. If there are repeated patterns, it's best to address and reinforce these skills at a staff meeting or at an in-service training.

In-Service Topic of the Week
As you plan your in-service trainings, we encourage you to incorporate skill-based training into each session. That's why, throughout the Not On My Watch series, we'll share an in-service topic of the week with an example of a scenario you can use to train your staff.

Topic: Actively Scanning the Pool during Rotations
It is extremely important that guards are alert and actively scanning their area of responsibility every 10 seconds. Often times, we see that transition times are when victims go unnoticed, so it is important to practice DROP drills when lifeguards are transitioning on and off of the pool deck. Remind guards to carefully scan their area of responsibility prior to and following the rotation.
