TEACHING TIPS
This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching
Welcome to the fall semester! Our teaching tips for this week feature important updates, resources, and reminders to help start your semester off strong.
Fall 2024 Updates and Reminders. Using the UNCG Syllabus Template helps ensure your syllabi are complete with the required components and language as outlined in the UNCG's Syllabus Policy. Consider adding important dates from the Fall 2024 Academic Calendar to your syllabi and/or Canvas courses to highlight important milestones in the semester. Are you new to UNCG? Do you need a refresher on using Microsoft Teams? Consider completing the LinkedIn Learning Course, “Teaching with Teams at UNCG,” which provides a detailed introduction to teaching with Microsoft Teams. When was the last time you checked your Canvas course content for broken links? This week's Learning Tech Tip demonstrates the Canvas link validator tool you can use to quickly locate them so they can be updated before students get started in your class.
Find your Well-Being here Canvas Module Updated. As part of creating a culture of care at UNCG, this brief module gives students information and access to an array of well-being resources. This resource was updated over the summer, so please import the newest version so all links are up to date. A video tutorial is available along with written step-by-step instructions. Consider adding this to your courses this fall and letting students know how to use this resource in the first week!
Building a Strong Foundation. Getting to know your students at the start of the semester is so important for building a strong foundation. The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of semester, so be intentional about taking time to create community. Here are a few ways to get started!
Post an introduction video on your Canvas page.
Create a welcome survey to learn about your students. Do they have a part-time job? Are they caretakers? Do they commute or live on campus? Edit this welcome survey template to fit your needs.
Instead of reading the syllabus, create a syllabus activity like a syllabus scavenger hunt or syllabus quiz for the first class to keep students engaged.
Now that we are beginning a new academic year, we want to hear from you to keep our teaching tips as timely and relevant as possible! The seven-week course will run September 16 - November 3 and will conclude our ACUE/UNCG partnership.
The course design micro is modality agnostic (supporting both online and face-to-face courses) and a great overview in course development principles. Don't miss out on this final opportunity.
Eligible faculty and staff who complete this ACUE course will receive a $250 professional development stipend in spring 2025 (state funds transferred to your unit). Register using the UNCG ACUE portal."
