1) Test every member who will be swimming. This includes special events, camp programs and open swim. 55% of non-swimmer drowning injuries happened during open swim.
2) Mark all swimmers with a bracelet, tape or other marker as a way to easily identify swimming ability. As a precaution, automatically mark all children 8 years and younger, as well as those that have not been tested, as "non-swimmers."
3) Protect non-swimmers by placing them in shallow water. In addition, choose one, or all, of the following: be sure the child is at arm's reach of the caregiver, equip them with properly fitted Coast Guard-approved life vests, and/or provide them with swim lessons.
