Controlling Waterhemp Without Over The Top Dicamba in Trait Soybeans
The Wisconsin Cropping Systems Weed Science program has conducted several research trials investigating postemergence (POST) weed control in XtendFlex soybean systems (dicamba-, glufosinate-, and glyphosate-resistant soybean) without OTT applications of dicamba. A compilation of data reports from these trials can be found listed below.

Field Notes Episode 16: Specialty Grain Markets
Wisconsin infrastructure for grain markets and the ability to drop off grains at the nearest elevator incentivizes corn and soybean (and wheat to a lesser extent) rotations. Breaking outside that box and finding alternative grain markets can yield dividends in price premiums and extended crop rotations enhancing farm resilience to drops in commodity prices and other external shocks. We talk with Willie Hughes, an organic and conventional grain farmer in Rock County, and Alyssa Hartman of the Artisan Grain Collaborative about how they navigate finding, complying with and knitting together these differentiated markets.

USDA Dairy Margin Coverage Program Update
The DMC program is designed as a risk management program, offering protection to dairy producers when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed price (the margin) falls below a certain dollar amount selected by the producer. The deadline to apply for this program is April 29, 2024.
UW-Madison Division of Extension will be hosting a virtual meeting featuring Leonard Polzin, Extension Dairy Markets and Policy Outreach Specialist. Polzin will cover what a producer needs to know for the 2024 DMC sign-up.

Fresh Cows: Milk Fever
Even though hypocalcemia, commonly known as milk fever, has been a fresh cow problem for years, it has been addressed through nutritional management during the dry period and early lactation to decrease clinical cases to less than 1%. However, 73% of 3rd and greater lactation animals have had subclinical hypocalcemia.
Most cases of milk fever occur between calving and approximately 3 days after calving, with the onset of milk production. Clinical milk fever occurs when blood calcium levels are less than 5.0 mg/dL and is divided into 3 stages, based on the severity.

Robotics & TMR Survey
The UW-Madison Division of Extension Dairy program is seeking participants for two nutrition surveys they are conducting.
-The first survey is aiming to gain a better understanding of what the most common feeding practices of Wisconsin high production Holstein herds are.
-The second survey focuses on robotic milking herds nutritional management.
The results of these surveys will be used for educational purposes. If you would like a local dairy educator to reach out to you and help fill out the survey, please email us.

Automated Milking Systems (AMS) User Group
Joining the AMS User Group provides participants with opportunities to collaborate with peers, access expert guidance, contribute to research efforts, and improve farming practices, ultimately enhancing efficiency, productivity, and profitability on their farms.
The AMS User Group aims to create a supportive community for dairy producers utilizing Automated Milking Systems (AMS), facilitating learning, idea exchange, and best practice sharing.

Take a systems approach to people-management on your farm
A system is a series of interconnected parts that drive an organization forward. A “systems approach” to human resources management on your farm considers the interconnectedness of all the efforts you have made to make your farm a great place to work. It includes every aspect of the employee life cycle, from the first time a prospective employee contacts you for a job interview to the point where a valued employee retires after a long, successful career with you. Taking this approach on your farm emphasizes all aspects of HR, from talent acquisition, learning and development, employee engagement, performance evaluation, compensation, and benefits.
