SBCC Foundation Board and Legacy Circle member Scott Vincent and his two brothers appreciate the benefits of a debt-free college education. Having benefited from financial support during their college years, they are committed to supporting programs that offer this opportunity to others. “We look at it as a pay-it-forward type of scenario,” Scott says. “It made a big difference in our lives, as we were able to pursue rewarding careers without the burden of debt.”
Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Scott and his siblings were inspired by their parents’ involvement in the community. After retiring from his 23-year career as assistant city attorney for the City of Santa Barbara, Scott had recently been elected to the SBCC Foundation Board of Directors when the Foundation launched the SBCC Promise in 2016. Providing all recent, local high school graduates the opportunity to attend SBCC full time at no cost, the Promise was — and is — the Foundation's most ambitious project. Since then, more than 7,000 students have participated.

“The Promise allows students to pursue a college education without dictating how they should proceed. It not only provides financial support, but academic counseling, helping them make good decisions and find their path,” says Scott, who has helped support the Promise and is also including the SBCC Foundation as a beneficiary in his estate plans.
No stranger to making financial arrangements that will benefit future students, Scott and his siblings established a scholarship through the Foundation years ago, in honor of their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. “You don’t need millions of dollars to make a meaningful contribution,” Scott said. “And when it comes to legacy gifts, a provision can be as simple as specifying a percentage of an estate that will benefit SBCC after other needs are met.”

Scott’s father had also served on the SBCC Foundation board of directors. After he died, Scott took over his seat and continued his legacy and commitment to making a great college education at SBCC accessible to everyone. His brothers have also dedicated time and resources to creating educational opportunities, at SBCC and elsewhere. Thanks to the Vincent family’s ongoing support for SBCC, more students—now, and in the future—will have the resources and guidance they need to pursue their dreams.
