Restoring Shale Glades at Middle Fork Barrens

Interspersed within the oak and oak-pine woodlands at Middle Fork Barrens Natural Area are a specialized natural community — shale glades. Glades are open, rocky areas dominated by drought-adapted forbs (flowering plants) and warm-season grasses. Over time, several glades at Middle Fork Barrens became overrun with eastern red cedar due to decades of fire suppression, resulting in a dramatic change as cedar shaded out the understory (the plants underneath). Read more here about restoring shale glades at Middle Fork Barrens.

A Lichen for the Holidays

If you are leaving out milk and cookies for Santa and want to leave something for his reindeer, you might want to think about some lichen – we even have reindeer lichen here in Arkansas. To learn more about this aptly named lichen, go to our Natural Features section of our website.

Hands-on Education Programs

The educational programs at the ANHC emphasize giving students “hands-on” experience with ecological concepts and making the information fun and easy to understand.  Sometimes this even includes getting on the floor and acting like a beetle! Read about what students learned from our recent American burying beetle program.
