Acts 5:33-39
33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

New International Version (NIV)
“In every church, there is a person who sits in the counsel of God. Find that person and trust them.” I’ll never forget Dr. Virtus Gideon saying that to our New Testament class in seminary. At that point, I had served as pastor in two different churches. In both churches, I encountered those people. They had helped me make better decisions.

The high priest and his friends were about to get in greater trouble. They wanted these followers of Jesus to go away. Should they kill them? What should they do? Gamaliel spoke with the wisdom of one who stood in the counsel of God. He reminded them of former would-be messiahs who had caused uprisings and been forgotten. Wisely, Gamaliel advised them to do nothing to the apostles. If they were not from God, their movement would die on its own.But if the movement was from God, fighting Jesus’ followers would be like fighting God. They could never defeat God.

Gamaliel was a highly respected Rabbi. At one point, a young man named Saul studied at his feet. The famous Rabbi helped them that day by reminding them that they could not stop the work of God. God loves everyone. But those who sit in his counsel know his heart and speak his mind. In every church, there is someone who listens to God and speaks for him. Who is that person in your community? Knit your soul to that person. Pray with them and listen to their wisdom. It may save you from making a grave mistake.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for giving wisdom to your people. We ask you because you give generously to all without finding fault. We need wisdom. Let us stand in the counsel of those who stand in your counsel today. Keep us in the center of your will. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
