Re: New US Travel Restrictions
Dear NYU International Students and Scholars:
I am writing to you as our records indicate that you are from one of the countries included in the White House’s
Proclamation restricting the entry of foreign nationals from specific countries.
What You Need to Know
On June 9, 2025 at 12:01 am EDT, new US travel restrictions will go into effect. We want to ensure you understand how this may impact you, depending on your immigration status and travel plans.
If You Are Currently in the United States
You may remain in the US and continue your studies or employment. The Proclamation does not affect individuals who are already lawfully present in the US.
If You Are Outside the US
If You Are from One of the Countries Under Full Restrictions
Nationals of the following countries are subject to a full suspension of entry as both immigrants and nonimmigrants:
Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen
This means that, starting June 9, most US visa types for citizens from these countries, including F-1, J-1, H-1B, and O-1, will be suspended. If you are outside the US and do not yet have a valid visa, you may not be able to enter after June 9.
- If you already hold a valid visa, consider returning to the US before June 9, if possible.
- If your visa expires after June 9 but before your planned return, please contact us immediately to discuss options (contact information is below).
- If you are a student or scholar and do not have a valid visa, please reach out to your advisor at your NYU school or program as soon as possible to explore any possible alternatives.
If You Are from One of the Countries Under Partial Restrictions
Nationals of the following countries face suspension of entry on B-1, B-2, F, M, and J visas only:
Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela
Other visa types, such as H-1B and O-1, are not included in the suspension
- If you currently hold a valid F or J visa and are outside the US, you may wish to return before June 9.
- If you are planning to apply for a new F or J visa, please consult with your advisor at your NYU school or program and our office as soon as possible.
Support from NYU
If you decide to return to the US earlier than you had initially planned, NYU still has
summer housing available for both undergraduate and graduate students. And the
NYU Student Emergency Fund provides NYU students with financial support when they need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, or unavoidable emergency expenses, including unanticipated housing costs.
