Dear Scholars,
With the holidays and breaks ahead, we want to remind you about NYU’s current policy on
personal travel. Keep in mind that travel to restricted states or any other country will result in required
quarantining. We urge you to keep in mind that travel restrictions can change rapidly with little notice. Depending on where you go, you may encounter challenges in departing a country or area, or face difficulties when you try to return. Should you need to conduct essential international travel, we are encouraging members of the community to plan on extra time for travel and register your trip with
NYU Traveler to access Public Safety assistance while traveling.
As always, if you do decide to travel, ensure that you have the proper documentation. Please review the
Travel Information page for specifics depending on your immigration status.
Please also keep in mind the following:
Restrictions on travel into the US continue to evolve quickly and with little notice; review the CDC’s website for a list of
travelers restricted from entry into the US. Please note, even if there are no travel restrictions in place for a given country today, there may be tomorrow. Even if you have a valid visa, or are exempt from the visa requirement, you may face difficulties returning to the US due to the various travel restrictions in place. At this time, the US government has not indicated when these restrictions may be lifted.
Many US Embassies/Consulates are operating with reduced services. If you need to obtain a new visa stamp, you may face delays or difficulties scheduling an appointment.
- On June 22, 2020, the Trump administration released its Proclamation Suspending Entry of Aliens Who Present a Risk to the US Labor Market Following the Coronavirus Outbreak (PP 10052). The proclamation suspends the US entry of H-1B scholars and their H-4 dependents effective June 24, 2020 through December 31, 2020. On August 12, the US Department of State announced that H-1B scholars and their H-4 dependents may qualify for National Interest Exceptions to Presidential Proclamations 10014 and 10052. Further, they announced that H-1B and H-4’s traveling directly to the US from the Schengen Area, UK, or Ireland may qualify for a National Interest Exceptions, as well. The Proclamation does not apply to applicants who were in the United States on the effective date of the Proclamation (June 24), or who have a valid H-1B or H-4 visa issued before the effective date.
Other countries, or even states within the US, may also have restrictions on individuals traveling from the US or the New York area. Please be sure to confirm whether you may face any obstacles – such as a mandatory self-isolation period – in any destination involved in your travel before you depart the US.
If you do find yourself “stuck” outside of the US, you may face difficulties related to payroll or your appointment/employment status. We would encourage you to discuss this matter with your academic department and Human Resources in advance of any travel.
We hope this information is helpful; please contact us at ogs.scholars@nyu.edu with any questions.
We wish you a safe and healthy rest of the semester.
Sincerely,
OGS International Faculty and Research Scholar Services
