Make the most of your RV adventures
|
A 2023 CBRE Hotels Advisory Group study (commissioned by Go RVing and the RV Industry Association) confirmed what many RV owners already know: RV travel is more affordable than other types of vacations, even when factoring in fuel and ownership costs. That’s good news for those of us who love the freedom of the open road. Still, most RV owners look for ways to stretch their travel dollars.
One of the smartest moves any RVer can make is to join Family RV Association. Membership comes with a host of money-saving benefits, and it connects you to a community of people who share your enthusiasm for RV life.
Read on for some budget-friendly ideas and a few fun extras this month.
Safe and happy travels!

The further we can make our dollars go, the more camping outings we can enjoy! Here are some tips for saving money in three key areas.
|
Camping fees
Family RV Association has several partners that help members save money on camping fees:
|
- Passport America has a network of more than 1,100 campgrounds across North America that offer half off the nightly fee, and FRVA members can join at a reduced rate.
-
RV Overnights extends FRVA members an exclusive 40% discount to join its network of unique host locations. No camping fees are involved; guests are simply asked to support the host by making a purchase during their stay.
-
KOA offers new FRVA members a free one-year membership in the KOA Rewards program, which gives campers 10% off the daily registration rates year-round.
|
|
|
- If you’re looking for free or low-cost activities for your family, sometimes you don’t need to look any further than the campground. Many organize fun events right on-site. In addition, campground hosts can be a great source of ideas for inexpensive things to do in the area.
-
Some library systems offer passes or programs that allow cardholders free or discounted admissions to museums, zoos, aquariums, and other recreational attractions. (Note that a residency requirement may be involved to acquire a library card.)
- Of course, one option that’s generally free is spending time in nature — hiking, biking, and exploring.
|
Food
Since our RVs come equipped with kitchens — inside and sometimes outside, too — RV travelers can save money on food expenses by preparing meals at the campsite. Here are a few other ideas for stretching the food budget:
|
- Plan meals to avoid overbuying at the grocery store. Bonus: Less stress when it comes to mealtimes!
- Families who travel together sometimes take turns preparing meals. Just add a little extra when you’re prepping, and you’ll have the night off when it’s someone else’s turn.
- If you’ll be gone from the RV for all or part of the day, consider packing a picnic.
-
You don’t need to completely deprive yourself of trying local restaurants and cuisine; that’s part of the fun of traveling. But you could consider eating lunch out instead of dinner, since many places offer lunch specials.

Medical & Travel Assist notes
|
The Medical & Travel Assist benefit is included automatically as part of your FRVA membership and provides emergency assistance services, such as emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, to active members. It covers members all around the world, whether traveling by RV or other means, if they are 75 miles from home (full-timers are always covered). Important: You and your partner must be listed on your FRVA membership to receive coverage under the program, so check your member ID card to make sure both names appear. Need a new card? Visit the Member Dashboard on FRVA.com to print one.
Have you used this valuable member benefit? If so, we want to hear about it! Email magazine@frva.com with your story.

This clean, spacious facility lies a half-mile east of Interstate 84 on U.S. 20-26, near Boise, Idaho. Ambassador offers 188 full-service sites, including 30-foot-by-85-foot pull-throughs, along with concrete patios and free Wi-Fi. It features a pool/spa/sauna, tiled private showers and restrooms, a large rec hall, an exercise room, laundry facilities, and more. Visit the park’s website for a video tour. RV melds two icons of design
|
Airstream, famous for its silver-sided RV silhouette, has partnered with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to create a home on wheels that celebrates classic American design. Wright’s Usonian architecture emphasized natural materials and connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. The 28-foot Frank Lloyd Wright Limited Edition takes inspiration from that and features a rear hatch that opens to nature; flexible living spaces, such as twin beds that quickly convert to a king bed; and custom furniture and woodwork. Only 200 will be built over the next two years.

A bloomin’ good travel tip
|
Few things are more relaxing than a stroll through a beautiful garden. The Garden Conservancy — with its mission of preserving, sharing, and celebrating America’s gardens and gardening traditions — is once again hosting “Open Days” through November. This program opens the gates to thousands of private gardens across the country, ranging from backyard jewel-box gardens to estate gardens and sweeping landscapes.

Patrick from New Jersey Outdoor Adventures treats viewers to a blast from the past with a walk-through of a renovated 1974 Shasta motorhome, built on a 1973 Chevy P-30 chassis with a 454 engine. Its owner, Killian (of Vancrafters on Facebook), was first drawn to the vehicle’s exterior. “It looks like it’s out of the movie Cars,” he said. “It’s got a lot of personality to it.” Though the motorhome needed major work, Killian and his wife saw its potential. They kept the classic look of the exterior, including the iconic Shasta wing, and completely transformed the interior, giving it a cozy cabin feel.

Few things say “camping” more than cooking over an open fire. And one easy way to enjoy food prepared this way is to put together foil-packet meals. The nice thing is that they can be prepped in advance and stored in the refrigerator or cooler until mealtime. Combine meat, potatoes, and vegetables and you have a complete meal. For even more fun, explore dessert creations made in foil packets. Megan McDuffie from Fresh Off The Grid shares tips, tricks, and some mouthwatering recipes in her post 47 Foil Packet Meals for Camping and Grilling.
