Jeremiah 32:25
And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.’

                Have you ever invested in hope?  What dividends did it pay?  We sometimes use hope as a synonym for “wish.”  In the scriptures hope is more of a confident expectation.  After Jeremiah told his people they were going into exile, he comforted them with the promise of restoration.

                One day Jeremiah put his money where his mouth was.  His cousin Hanamel came and offered him the right to buy land.  No one was buying land in those days.  It was likely occupied by enemy armies.  But God told Jeremiah to buy the land and to record the deed as an illustration of the hope that God would restore his people and they would return home.

                After the fact, Jeremiah asked, “Why did you tell me to do that?”  God answered him, “Just as I have brought disaster on this people, I will bring them the good fortune I now promise them. Fields will be bought again."  Jeremiah invested in hope by buying land he would never enjoy.  How can we invest in hope today?  In a world of hand–wringing over the trouble around us, what if you and I acted out our hope?  Emily Dickinson wrote, “Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without the words and never stops at all.”  

 Pray with me:  
Father, we thank you for the hope we have in Christ.  We believe you when you say that the world does not end with a whimper and a sigh, or with the sound of a gun, but with a song of hope.  Help us to sing that song, and to hum that tune on the worst of days as a sure sign to others that we trust in you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
