Psalm 37:1-4
Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious of those who do wrong;
 for like the grass they will soon wither,
    like green plants they will soon die away.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
New International Version (NIV)
                We are so used to happy endings.  Somebody told me that a new movie did not end as we would want it to.  The bad guys won.  Or did they?  Sometimes it looks like the right will fail and the wrong prevail.  When we see someone seemingly succeeding by doing the wrong thing, we may be tempted to follow their example.  That would be a mistake.

                Instead of imitating evildoers, the Psalmist reminds us to trust in the Lord and do good.  Our answer to the folly of the world is faith in our faithful God.  He has proven to be trustworthy again and again.  The wrong will fail and the right prevail.

                Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart..  What does that mean? It may sound transactional to us.  If I delight in the Lord he has to give me what I want.  Sounds simple, right?

                 So what does it mean to take delight in the Lord?  When we hear the Lord's word preached, when we see the beauty of God's creation, when we remember his promises are we bored?  Or is Christ our treasure?   It reminds me of Jesus' words in the beatitudes:  "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled."  When we delight in God he is the desire of our heart and we get to know him.  When God is all that we want and most desire, then we get God.  Doesn't that sound like the start of happily ever after?  It does!

 Pray with me:
Father, we thank you that we can trust in you even when evil people harm others.  This is your world, let us never forget that though the wrong seems often so strong you are the Ruler yet.  Teach us to delight in you more than we do in anything, or anyone.  We pray believing in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
