Addressing Road Conditions in District 5
At the April 23 Council meeting, I addressed a number of issues during Council Member comments. In particular, I want District 5 residents to know that the City’s Public Works Department is addressing conditions on Burgreen Road and Wall Triana Highway. However, in the case of Wall Triana, it is a multi-jurisdictional road and while Public Works has eliminated several potholes, others remain in areas that are not within the Huntsville city limits. We have notified the other entities that have jurisdiction in those segments of Wall Triana about the road conditions.

I also highlighted the tremendous work being done at Columbia High School and the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering.

Old Monrovia Road Streetscape
I was proud to cast my vote in support of the streetscape project on Old Monrovia Road that the City Council approved at the April 23 meeting. The upgrades on the east side of MidCity District will be from University Drive to Corporate Drive and feature 2,700 feet of streetscape improvements. Best of all, the project is scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

Remembering the Binford Family Legacy
Preserving history is an immense responsibility and I was thrilled to help recognize the legacy of the Binford family in Huntsville at the March 26 City Council meeting. I presented a resolution to Dr. Henry Claxton Binford, retired professor emeritus of History in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University, and his wife, Janey Cyrwus, to accept on behalf of the Binford family – who were part of some of the proudest and most impactful chapters in Huntsville’s history.
The Binford family history traces back more than a century, encouraging Blacks to make their voices heard through voting and supporting educational opportunities. Please take a moment to read the full resolution to gain a fuller picture of what the Binford family has meant to Huntsville.

Abaco Systems Ribbon-Cutting
It was my honor to participate recently in ribbon-cutting festivities for Abaco Systems at their campus on Quality Circle. Abaco Systems produces quality, reliable products, technology and solutions used in military and aerospace programs on land, at sea and in the air as well as in commercial and industrial settings. I enjoy celebrating businesses who invest in Huntsville.

Funding for Columbia High School Girls Track Team
I’m always happy to support students at Columbia High School and recently presented a $5,000 check to the Eagles’ girls outdoor track team from the District 5 Council Improvement Fund. High school sports teach so many life lessons and I consider it an invaluable part of a student’s education. Accepting the check was Columbia track Coach Taylor Jones and Principal Lenoise Richey.

Welcoming Dragon Alley to MidCity District
I was glad to help welcome Dragon Alley to MidCity District, participating in the ribbon cutting for the Asian street food restaurant and bar at 1030 MidCity Dr. It’s a tremendous addition to MidCity, which continues to grow and provide more offerings not only to Huntsville but surrounding communities as well.

Supporting Students at Oakwood University
While attending the Oakwood University Gold & Blue Scholarship Gala, I was privileged to present a check for $22,000 from the District 5 Council Improvement Fund to the school to support growth and success of its students. Huntsville is blessed to have an elite and a diverse collection of colleges and universities that prepare their students to enter the workforce in a wide range of careers.
