This three-part mini-course starts with an overview of IP roles for PhDs and the life cycle of a patent. The second session will dive into application best practices. The course will end with a "Meet the Firms" day where we will be joined by representatives from multiple firms to discuss examples from their firms and roles for PhDs.

Effective Research Presentations |

This mini-course will dive into how to effectively communicate your research through poster and PowerPoint presentations. Each of the two 90-minute sessions will be a workshop dedicated to effective poster presentations and effective PowerPoint presentations, respectively. Participants are encouraged to register to attend the Effective Visual Communication for Research workshop on Feb 25, 2026, 1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. to learn how to effectively and transparently incorporate visual elements, such as charts, tables, and images, into your research presentations or posters.

The NSF I-Corps program provides educational training and experiential learning for teams exploring market applications for STEM technologies. The spring cohort includes five in-person sessions, 20+ stakeholder interviews, and individualized coaching. Teams (2–4 participants) must include at least one teammate affiliated with UChicago, Argonne National Laboratory, Fermilab, Marine Biological Laboratory, or Chicago-area colleges and universities. Early-stage concepts welcome—no prototype required.

This workshop will introduce aspiring administrators to principles that will help them effectively design student programs. Through a hands-on activity, participants will model the stages of the design cycle, from needs identification and assessment to program evaluation and monitoring. Participants will leave with an understanding of the design process and an ability to apply a design framework to address challenges faced by students—a helpful skill for future faculty members and administrators alike.
