Utair is First in Russia to Take off With Advanced Optimization

The progressive and highly competitive Russian airline Utair, with more than fifty Boeing 737 aircrafts in their fleet, is implementing the Jeppesen Crew Pairing optimiser and the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM). This makes Utair the first airline in Russia to operate optimised crew pairings, and also the first airline to use BAM for proactive risk reduction in real time during optimisation.
"Jeppesen Crew Pairing will deliver increased efficiency, whilst also improving flight safety using BAM, which provides us with an important competitive edge in the marketplace", says Dmitry Belokon, Head of Crew Planning at Utair. "Using the leading technology for pairing optimisation also allows for detailed what-if scenarios, supporting our strategic decisions that are crucial for capturing additional market going forward. It is all highly exciting", he adds.
"We are thrilled to work together with Utair. The energy and momentum in this airline is truly remarkable and Jeppesen is proud to collaborate with Utair shoulder to shoulder in this transition, and in the years to come", says Arslan Karadjev, Flight Operations Sales Director at Jeppesen.
The Jeppesen Crew Pairing optimizer is an easily installed add-on to any legacy crew management process (be it using an in-house solution, or one from another vendor) that enables direct savings of 3-10% on your overall planning results. Sleepless in Seattle - Amazing Gathering of Expertise

In early November, the industry experts in crew and fleet management once again came together in large numbers for the annual Jeppesen Connect Users Conference. The conference, graciously hosted by Alaska Airlines, was this time held close to the Boeing Renton manufacturing facilities in Seattle, with some 140 people attending from 31 different Airlines. It was three great days packed with information sharing on best practices, demos, ideas, trends, new technology and presentation from airlines on their challenges and improvement projects. A conference summary is available for Jeppesen customers - please contact your Service Manager.
One presentation of particular interest for this newsletter, was LATAM’s presentation on their FRMS journey and implementation of the Boeing Alertness Model. Jennifer Campilongo, Senior Manager Crew Scheduling Department, shared the story of how LATAM got the departments of Crew Scheduling and Human Factors to work together at LATAM and discussed some of the results they have achieved together.
Ms. Campilongo has a track record of delivering financial savings by putting pairing and rostering optimization to work, including cutting edge technologies such as Dynamic Aircraft Rotations and Retiming. This time her mission was to reduce fatigue risk levels, without incurring additional costs. The results were quite impressive, including a four percent overall reduction in fatigue risk exposure on the narrow body fleet and reductions in excess of 50% for the most problematic rosters. And this without spending a single extra duty day!
With the conference sleep debt now paid back in full, we are already looking forward to the 2018 Jeppesen Connect Users Conference, to be held in beautiful Lisbon, hosted by TAP Air Portugal.

Your Opinion is Interesting, but Optimization Matters.

There is significant value connected to taking the right decisions when implementing change. To find the valuable options, and avoid the costly ones. Far too often, decisions are taken without proper analysis and quantification upfront. This paper briefly explains how the Jeppesen production system doubles up - being also the perfect gauge for decision making.
The Jeppesen Crew Management suite (link) is built for quickly producing the best possible planning results using leading optimisation techniques. The challenge is... (please read more here).
