People. Places. Things To Do. |
|
| | Welcome to The Green Room, friends.Â
As we gear up for pledge week here at our public radio station, KSMU, I am filled with gratitude for my role here as arts reporter.
I have met so many people who are contributing to the fertile arts scene we have here. I am honored to bring these folks to you each week here in The Green Room. I have been a musician for a long time here in the Ozarks, but the best part of this job is learning and sharing more about other artistic mediums.Â
This week I heard the rattle of spray paint cans in preparation for the Overlay Festival, a two day Midwest-based event celebrating the integrations of visual art, live music, technology and the subculture that connects them.Â
Springfield’s culture is climbing higher than ever. This year’s artists are sending color and imagination skyward, splashing entire walls with bold stories that rise six stories tall. 🏙️
On the opposite end of the splash and color that Overlay brings is the quiet of writing and reading. Letters on the page spill into the minds of readers, bringing you Oh The Horror!, the spookier side of October to the Springfield-Greene County Library. Local authors gather here to spin haunting tales, whispering about the eerie and the possessed. đź‘»
That’s what I love about The Green Room - the chance to share art in all its forms, from bright explosions of color to the quiet weight of words.Â
No need to knock - come on into The Green Room with me!Â

It is 12 years ago, and you live in Springfield, Missouri, and you are cool. Â
You might not know it, you might have accidentally stumbled into it, but you are cool.Â
You are at a show, maybe even a major (local) venue, and there are, like, a LOT of people there and they are (mostly) young and good looking and they are also cool.Â
Perhaps you are too.Â
The band is Kids & Chemicals, and I was NOT there, and I am NOT cool.Â
This is no greater complaint, just one of those things of life. We were off from each other’s course by just enough, and I never plugged in even though it was right under my nose. I saw them, but I was never “there.”Â
What a foolish man.Â
I could have been cool.Â
I featured Daisypusher a few weeks back (the band that eventually sprung from Kids & Chemicals) and Hitters, (the band that sprung from that prior sprunging), just released a new pair of singles and have been recently featured on the show. With “Spooky Season” now upon us, I thought I would highlight a Local Radar favorite, point you towards some excellent new music through an older tune, and give you a dark bit of a musical treat to enjoy. Give “Under Your Skin” a spin and we’ll see you next week!Â
