Numbers 13:30-31
Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”  But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”
New International Version (NIV)
Is the majority always right?  Twelve spies went into the land of Canaan.  God sent them to spy out the land he was going to give to them.  Intimidated by the giants in the land, the majority, ten out of the twelve brought back a negative report.  Joshua and Caleb believed the Lord and encouraged the people to follow God’s plan to go into Canaan.  Sadly, the crowd agreed with the majority and disobeyed God.

My math memory tells me that 10 out of 12 is 83.33%.  That is a commanding majority of Israelites who were against going into the land.  We must not confuse our political liberty with spiritual liberty.  We have such a beautiful democracy in the United States which allows every person to vote.  But what if the majority were to vote against God’s will?  Would they then be right because they were in the majority?

Right is right though all the world says it is wrong.  Wrong is wrong though all the world says it is right.  We live in an interesting day when time-tested truths from God’s word are being challenged on every hand.  Even the elect may be tempted to go along in order to get along.  This would be a mistake.  For most of Christian history in most places, Christianity has been in the minority and out of step with majority opinion.  In that environment, Christianity has not only survived but thrived.  Like Caleb and Joshua, we must live according to our convictions, being true to God no matter what people say.  J. B. Tidwell was right, “One plus God is always a majority.”

Pray with me:
Father, by your Holy Spirit reveal to us again your will for our lives.  Teach us in your word as the Spirit reminds us again of everything Jesus said.  Help us to live by our convictions, speaking the truth in love to all who will hear.  Let not your church be harsh and unkind.  Neither let us be untrue.  We turn to you Lord.  Give us great grace today as we seek like our Savior Jesus to love the world into relationship with you.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
