We have enjoyed our membership with FMCA (now Family RV Association – FRVA) since 2013. It has always been a great organization to belong to. They have always been there for us. We were full-time RVers for 5.5 years. FMCA was always our “go to” for advice on repairs, tires, campgrounds, insurance — and the list goes on. It is a valued organization. We are very grateful.

Keep track of the weather
|
Tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, blizzards, floods, dust storms — these and other natural disasters can arise unexpectedly. As an RVer, how prepared are you? Scott & Van Russell noted in a Family RVing magazine article: “The longer and farther you travel in your RV, it becomes a matter of when, not if, you will experience bad weather.”
So, prepare and be weather aware.
First, it pays to invest in a weather band radio or weather alert radio, especially one with a battery backup. These radios utilize the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards Network, which broadcasts warnings and post-event info about weather threats as well as natural, technological, and national emergencies. A weather alert radio automatically broadcasts the warnings it receives. Note that weather band radios must be turned on to transmit warnings.
Your smartphone likely has a weather app installed. Visit the App Store or Google Play for others: The Weather Channel; AccuWeather; Clime; National Hurricane Center Data; Watch Duty: Wildfire Maps & Alerts; Windfinder: Wind & Weather map; Marine Weather Forecast Pro, etc.

Keep a go bag packed with essentials near your RV door. It can be grabbed if you need to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Include vehicle keys, a flashlight, prescription medicine, money, phones/chargers/laptops, batteries, nutrient-dense foods, bottled water, a change of clothes, and pet basics. Stow photocopies of important documents — drivers licenses, passports, Social Security/Medicare cards, etc. — in a waterproof, zip-top bag.
It's also crucial to know your location. What county are you in? What roads are nearby? What’s your escape route if you need to leave in a hurry? If you’re parked in a campground, does the facility have a safe building to shelter in? If not, where should you go when you evacuate?
Above all, stay safe. Don’t put your travel crew in harm’s way. If you need to leave your RV and possessions behind, so be it. Your life is more important!

Family RV Association’s hundreds of chapters are as varied as their members. For example, the Racecar Fans enjoy all types of racing. Members meet up at races, where they share meals and socialize. Some members help others who seek insider knowledge about racetracks, such as preferred locations for seats and RV sites and how to acquire them.
The Penn Coachmen chapter welcomes owners of all RV types. Members primarily hail from Pennsylvania, with others from New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Texas, and Florida. They generally hold monthly rallies; in September, they’ll gather at the Pocono Raceway infield in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.
For more info about these or other FRVA chapters, search online or email chapters@frva.com.

FRVA has added several international events to its lineup — and all RVers are welcome. You don’t have to be a member to attend, so bring your friends! Next summer, celebrate America’s 250th birthday with your fellow RVers during FRVA’s 113th International Convention & RV Expo, July 1-4, 2026, at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. Registration starts in January 2026. And in 2027, FRVA returns to Perry for its 114th International Convention & RV Expo, March 17-20.
Of course, you still have time to join your RV classmates for learning, socializing, shopping, and fun at FRVA’s “Rock & Roll High School” International Convention, in session July 16-19, 2025, at CAM-PLEX Multi-Event Facilities in Gillette, Wyoming. Don’t be late to class!

On June 14, the U.S. Army celebrates its 250th anniversary. It commemorates the milestone online by honoring the sacrifices, achievements, and spirit of American warriors in three categories: Heroes, Legacy, and Nostalgia. To all U.S. Army military members, active and retired, we salute you. To everyone who has served their country in a military role, we thank you for your service.

Miles of abandoned or unused rail corridors have received new life thanks in part to the Rails to Trails Conservancy. This grassroots movement is dedicated to building a nation connected by trails where people can safely walk, bike, and enjoy the outdoors. When completed, its signature project, the Great American Rail-Trail, will create the United States’ first cross-country multiuse trail system — traversing 12 states and encompassing more than 3,700 miles from Washington, D.C., to Washington state.

The summer RV season is in full swing! If you’ve been thinking about giving your campsite a little extra flair, check out these ideas for turning your outdoor space into a relaxing oasis.
|
Snug as a bug in a rug. A camping mat can anchor your patio area — plus help to keep dirt and sand outside the RV. Look for woven plastic RV mats, which come in all kinds of colors and sizes. Some, like those from CGear, are even designed to allow air and sunlight to pass through to avoid damaging the grass underneath.
|
Take a seat. Comfy camp chairs are a must. Zero-gravity lounge chairs are a favorite among RVers, but the options don’t end there. Check out brands like GCI Outdoor and Kuma Outdoor Gear for options that are both sturdy and stylish.
|
Light the night. String lights can add a cozy glow to your setup, plus help you see after dark. Be sure to use outdoor-rated lights. For something brighter or flashier, check out LED awning or under-glow lights from Boogey Lights. Just remember to keep things campsite friendly, as not everyone appreciates the extra illumination. Also, be sure to turn off all lights when you head inside for the night.
