Acts 24:15-16
and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.   So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.
New International Version (NIV)
John Wooden once opined, “There is no pillow as soft as a clear conscience.”  Guilt steals sleep.  So what do we do about it?
When Paul preached to the Roman Governor Felix, he explained why he had been arrested.  He had not done anything wrong at the Temple, but the religious leaders disagreed with the Good News of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.  Sometimes we get into trouble for doing the right things.
Felix and his wife listened to Paul because they hoped he would offer them a bribe to gain his release.  Paul preached that what happened to Jesus will happen to his followers.  All who die will rise, both the righteous and the unrighteous.  Because Paul knew he would give an account to God, he kept his conscience clear.
There are two paths to keeping a clear conscience:  first, we get a clear conscience by confessing our sin and asking God for forgiveness.  This is qualitatively different than pretending we don’t make mistakes.  Second, we keep it clear by making right choices every day.  Today, empowered by the risen Christ, we can do what we need to do.  What would Christ do if he lived your life today?  Do that.  And rest well!
Pray with me:
Father, you know all of my failures.  I will not defend myself to you or to others.  Help me today to find forgiveness through the sacrifice of my Savior on the cross.  As your kindness leads me to repentance, help me to live the life you always meant for me to live.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
