Psalm 91:5-6
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
New International Version (NIV)
How can we live fearlessly in a frightening world?  You don't need me to tell you that our world can be such a scary place.  In the ancient world the people feared  war and illness.  Both are still major concerns today.  Hollywood plays on these fears with movies about future wars and about outbreaks of new diseases.

Reality may be more frightening than fiction.   As I write, there are active wars in many countries.  Sabers are rattled and threats are made.  In some ways our freedom and our strong military history may insulate us from fear.  We need only remember 9/11 to know that no country is fully secure from terrorist attacks.  Where do we find hope?

The Psalmist says, if you know the Lord is your shelter, refuge and fortress, then you are not overcome by fear.  Are you afraid of the dark?  Many of us had frightening childhood experiences which make darkness difficult for us.  But Jesus is the Light of the World who dispels the darkness.  What about a terror attack?  Christians do not live in perpetual fear.    God offers us protection from both injury and illness.  Though we are never fully secure in this world, we remember that we have been born again to live in another world.  When heaven comes down to earth, there will be lasting peace and no disease.  These promises are ours in Christ.  Let's claim them!

Pray with me:
Our Father who dwells in perpetual light, you know how frightening our world can be.  Open our eyes today to remind us that you are for us. Dispel the darkness with your light.  Help us to live at peace in a world at war.  Make us fearless as we follow you today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
