HEIDI RABENECK, UW-STOUT ONLINE PROGRAM MANAGER

Heidi Rabeneck

UW-Stout Online Program Manager

How long have you worked for the university?
I started working at UW-Stout in the fall of 2000. Wow, coming up on 15 years!

I have been with Stout Online since its inception, working as a program manager for the past 13 years.

What do you like most about your work in Stout Online?
Working with a variety of programs, students and campus departments. Collaborating on creative solutions that enhance services and the student experience. Serving on campus committees and being a part of the discussion that keeps UW-Stout on the forefront of innovative programs and services.

Is there other professional information you would like to share?
I have a BS in Business Administration and an MS in Vocational and Technical Education, both from Stout. Over the past few years, I have taken graphic design courses for personal interest and professional development while working full time with a family at home.

Before working at UW-Stout, I was a project manager at a small Geographic Information Systems firm in Madison. Prior to that, I was a software trainer for a textbook wholesaler in the Chicago area. These experiences have helped my professional growth and interest in quality service.
What place in the U.S. would you most like to visit and why?
There are so many places I would like to visit or re-visit, but I would start with New York City . . . the sights, the sounds and the history. In addition, I would love to re-visit Kauai, Hawaii. It's the complete opposite of New York  10% access by paved road  and the ultimate relaxation destination!

What is one of your favorite quotes?
Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if you only try. – Dr. Seuss
JAMISON PATRICK, INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

Instructional Designer eTips

Jamison Patrick, UW-Stout Online’s instructional designer, offers helpful tips for online instructors. Excerpted below are best practices for creating instructional audio-video media, prepared by David Anthony, Jamison’s student-assistant.
Best Practices for Creating Instructional
Audio-Video Media
Audio Recording
  1. Enunciate properly, keep professional and try not to ramble too far from your script.
  2. Do frequent audio checks. Before recording a longer segment, do a test recording to see if your voice is clear and without background distraction.
  3. Do not chew gum.
  4. Rehearse main points as much as necessary to maintain control over the content.
Screen Recording
  1. Clean up your desktop and browsing window beforehand. This is probably the most important step.
  2. Keep recordings from 3-5 minutes long. If you need slightly longer than that to wrap up a point, that is fine.
Video Recording
  1. Find a clean, comfortable space that is not too distracting.
  2. Plan what you are going to say to eliminate vocal “filler,” such as “ahs” or “ums.”
  3. Wear clothing suitable to your profession/comfort level. Avoid stark patterned clothing, such as pinstripes, as these often don’t translate well on a screen. As always, try not to wear clothing that may be distracting.
  4. Assure that the video is neither too dark nor washed out (too bright.)
  5. Center your face in the frame or, better yet, align your face according to the rule of thirds (roughly positioned 1/3 from either edge of the video.)
  6. Ideal video length for online courses is 3-5 minutes long. Including natural pauses after larger main points greatly helps with any asset production workflows.
