FULBRIGHT JOURNEY TO NYU
#4: Safety in the City

Congratulations--we are looking forward to welcoming you as a member of our NYU community and as one of our Fulbright scholars!
The International Student Hub (I-Hub) is your central resource for everything related to being an international student at New York University. We are a collaboration between the Office of Global Services (OGS) and the Center for Student Life (CSL) dedicated to support your success and well-being at NYU.
Most of your questions related to academics would be directed to your hosting academic department. Your immigration questions should be directed to IIE.
To contact IIE for any and all of your immigration-based matters: You can find all the information about your Fulbright Program at Fulbright Online. The Resources section has the contact information (email and phone) for your IIE advisor. It also lists the emergency line if a serious emergency arises outside of business hours. The website should be your go-to for all IIE Fulbright-related questions/documents/policies, etc.
This message is the fourth of an email series for new international students (catch up on previous emails if you missed any). They contain very important resources to help you acclimate to NYU and to the US.
Here we’ve compiled some basic guidelines to help you understand safety in NYC and the US.

NYU Campus Safety
The NYU Department of Campus Safety is committed to providing safety and security for our community and property, enabling the pursuit of academic and professional goals. Find out more about them.
Washington Square Campus: The lobby located at 561 LaGuardia Place, is open 24 hours, seven days a week, with Campus Safety Officers available to provide assistance. The 7 Washington Place lobby is open weekdays offering ID Card and Lost and Found services.
Brooklyn Campus: In Brooklyn, the Card Center is located at 2 MetroTech and open weekdays while the Campus Safety space in the cellar of 370 Jay Street offers lost and found and other safety services during the week.

Safety and Security
While NYU Campus Safety works 24/7 to promote safety on campus for the members of our community, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your property while navigating NYU and its surrounding urban environment. Please be sure to read helpful safety information for different situations.

Protect Yourself From Scams
NYU Campus Safety has reported to us that phone scammers are targeting international students now more than ever. If you’ve received calls from someone saying they're from the government, law enforcement, or a similar organization asking for personal info, money, or gift cards, don't engage. These entities will not call you. Scammers 'spoof' real numbers to steal data and money. Find more resources to avoid scams and fraud.

Know Your Rights
It’s important for you to be aware of the rights you have in the US as an international student or scholar: the rights for US citizens and permanent residents are not the same as rights for people in non-immigrant statuses such as F-1 and F-2 or J-1 and J-2.
Please visit our Know Your Rights page for further presentations and resources connected to this topic, including tips on if you are stopped at a border when entering the US.
