Meet the CCA's: Commuter Center Assistants

Ever since I started at Miami, I have been a commuter student. I also attended Miami Middletown for two semesters while I was in high school. I live with my parents, six siblings, dog and cat in a farmhouse about 25 minutes east of campus. When I first started at Miami, I was really nervous about commuting. I knew that the vast majority of students lived on campus and I was afraid that I would feel like an outsider or that I would miss out on the “college experience”. Luckily, I met a girl in one of my classes who invited me to try out for the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Club. I knew I wanted to meet people, so I said yes even though it was outside of my comfort zone. Joining the team showed me that I actually had a lot in common with Miami students, and that there were tons of opportunities here to take advantage of. Since joining frisbee, I’ve been involved in Commuter Council, Student Government, Choraliers and I even got to be a SOUL! Getting involved on campus was a huge confidence booster for me and it helped me feel a sense of belonging. I started working as a Commuter Center Assistant because I want to be a resource for other commuter students as they navigate through their unique college journey.

Hi everybody! My name is Aisha Fichtner and this will be my second year working as one of your Commuter Center Assistants. I’m also the treasurer of Commuter Council (an awesome club that you should join!). I live at home in West Chester with my parents, my younger sister and my dog (Wishbone) and hedgehog (Loki). I’m a vegan foodie and I’m very passionate about all things food and health! Chipotle is the best fast food ever (I love getting a veggie burrito with guac!). I’m obsessed with travelling and I’m lucky enough to fly to Switzerland every year to visit my mom’s side of the family; this past summer we visited Venice for a few days too. I love working in the Commuter Center and if you ever have questions or concerns, please let us know; we are here to help make your commuter experience at Miami a great one!

Back to School: Finding Your Routine
Getting back into the school routine can be a struggle for many college students. Keeping up on sleep, finishing homework, and staying healthy may seem impossible at the start of the semester, so we've got some tips to keep you going.

TIP # 1: PRIORITIZE YOUR ACADEMICS

  1. Form a relationship with your professors...this is crucial to gaining maximum success in the classroom. Meeting with professors will demonstrate that you are driven and motivated to do well. It can also lead to recommendation letters and more networking to eventually get internships or jobs.

  2. Keep a planner…it will help you stay organized and prepare for assignment dates and exams.

  3. Select a quiet, calm place to study and work. Removing yourself from possible distractions will help you stay focused to efficiently produce high-quality work. Some places to study on campus are…

    1. The Commuter Center in 2045 Armstrong Student Center

    2. Study rooms in Armstrong

    3. King or B.E.S.T. library

  4. Stay ahead... procrastination is a big problem for many students. Getting things done early means you have plenty of time to ask the professor questions if your don’t understand the assignment: plus it leaves you more time for fun, relaxing, and sleeping!

  5. Use your time in between classes wisely. Since you typically won't be tempted to head back home to take a nap between your classes.

TIP # 2: MAXIMIZE YOUR COMMUTER STATUS

Commuters definitely have some additional hurdles when it comes to weather and traffic. But be smart of getting to campus! Here are some bonus tips for commuter students.
  1. Use the WAZE GPS app for real time traffic.
  2. Check your email every morning BEFORE you leave for class. Some professors will email their classes if they are cancelling class. You might save yourself a trip!
  3. If the campus is ever closed due to weather, the official reference to check is the university website, but you can also sign up for Miami’s Emergency Text Messaging System.
  4. Get to know the BCRTA buses. It's free to ride with your Miami ID card, and you'll definitely encounter some days when it's just not practical (snow... freezing temps... rain) to walk.

TIP # 3: STAY HEALTHY!

Staying Healthy: Eat healthy. Wash hands. Drink plenty of water. Exercise. Get 7 - 9 hours of sleep per night.
