This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching.
This week's tips focus on submitting midterm grades and providing opportunities for mid-semester feedback.
- Why do we have midterm grades? Midterm grades help direct students to action by providing valuable insights into their academic performance. To ensure our students receive the support they need to succeed, consider referring any students who may benefit from additional assistance to our tutoring, academic success, and academic advising resources. Please prioritize this task as it significantly impacts their academic progress and our retention efforts.
- When and how to submit midterm grades. You will submit midterm grades for all students in your full-term undergraduate courses (graduate and part-of-term courses are exempt). Midterm grades will be open until Friday, February 16 at midnight. Midterm grades are entered in UNCGenie in the same way as final grades. You can find complete instructions for submitting midterm grades on the Registrar's website. If you do not have formal assessments at this point in the semester to determine a midterm grade, you can use other indicators such as student engagement, non-graded materials, and/or attendance as a proxy for their performance.
- Speaking with your students about midterm grades. It is important to have a conversation with your students before and potentially after they receive their midterm grades. You may wish to convey this information in a Canvas announcement or make time for a brief discussion during class. It is helpful to explain the purpose of the midterm grade policy and help cultivate a growth mindset by connecting students with resources so they can improve or maintain their grades. You may also want to remind students they can visit you during office hours to discuss their progress and plan for success in your course.
- Soliciting mid-semester feedback. While midterm grades are an opportunity to provide students with feedback on their academic progress, it it also an excellent opportunity to receive feedback from students on their experience in the course. It's important to remember that this is not a satisfaction survey but rather an exercise to help determine what students need to learn best in your class. You can use our Microsoft Forms template to collect feedback anonymously based on the start-stop-continue model; however you can also use the the four question model or modify the survey to ask about particular assignments. Either way, be sure to follow up on the feedback promptly and address any questions or concerns with students so they know their voices have been heard!
