Charter principal wins state honor, LA Standards Review, and ESEA reauth
July 2015
Dear Friend,
The 2015-2016 school year is almost here! Are you ready?
We at LAPCS have had a busy summer as we prepare to support, promote, and advocate for our charter schools across the state for another year. We've spent time reflecting on our programming and services to ensure that we're better meeting your needs, and we'll be sharing with you more information on our latest offerings for this coming year soon.
A few items I wanted to highlight this month:
  • As a membership-driven organization, we're proud to say that we represented more than 90 percent of charter schools in Louisiana last year. We're currently asking our members to renew their membership with LAPCS for 2015-2016. By joining LAPCS, you will make sure the voices of your charter school, your students, and your families are being heard by local and state policymakers. If you have any questions about membership, please contact Melissa Carollo.
  • Take advantage of the opportunity to weigh in on Louisiana's Student Standards by providing your comments through the Louisiana Department of Education's Standards Review Portal. Read on for more information on the process.
  • Last week, the U.S. Senate passed the Every Child Achieves Act, which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) with improvements to the Charter Schools Program. The House passed its own version, the Student Success Act, on July 9. For more information, please read this statement from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
  • Finally, I want to remind you one more time that the deadline to submit proposals for our 8th annual Louisiana Charter Schools Conference is coming up at the end of this month. Please spread the word to your contacts who might be interested in presenting.
We're constantly thinking about how to better serve you so that you in turn can better serve your school community of students, teachers, and families. Please continue to give us feedback and let us know how else we can support your work.
Sincerely,
Caroline Roemer Shirley

Rene' Lewis-Carter Named 2016 Louisiana Middle School Principal of the Year
Martin Behrman Charter School principal Rene' Lewis-Carter has been named Louisiana's 2016 Middle School Principal of the Year, becoming the first charter school leader in the state to win this prestigious honor.
A New Orleans native, Lewis-Carter has led Behrman in Algiers since 2005, opening the school just after Hurricane Katrina. Since then, Behrman has consistently been one of the highest performing open-enrollment charter schools in New Orleans. Behrman is part of the  Algiers Charter School Association.
“My success as a principal, my non-negotiables for students’ success, and my advice to others in the field are rooted in my uncompromised focus on student achievement,” said Lewis-Carter.
Take Action: Participate in Louisiana's Standards Review
The Louisiana Department of Education's Standards Review Portal is now open, giving parents, educators, and the public the opportunity to provide feedback on the state's current academic content standards in English language arts and mathematics.
The portal is part of the 2015-2016 Louisiana Student Standards review process, which was established to ensure that those individuals closest to students will review and develop expectations for Louisiana students that will prepare them for a successful transition to college and career.
Please take advantage of this opportunity to provide your input into the standards! The deadline to submit feedback is August 5. For more information and to submit your comments, visit the portal website at www.louisiana.statestandards.com.
