Hello Volunteer,
Have you noticed that spring migration is already upon us? Cedar Waxwings, Summer Tanagers, and more are being seen in our sanctuaries and we're excited to see what we spot next! We have lots to do to prepare for the migration, from cleaning the coast to getting trails ready for birders. So if you want to get out and do some birding while also improving their habitat, check out our upcoming volunteer opportunities!

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Spring Migration
March 9th - May 5th
Daily 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Location - High Island Sanctuaries
Spring migration brings thousands of people to the internationally acclaimed Smith Oaks and Boy Scout Woods sanctuaries. We need volunteers to help at both sanctuaries' kiosks with admission and merchandise sales, maintenance of daily sightings lists, and to provide sanctuary information to visitors. Training is given on site so no experience is required!

Sanctuary Work Days
Saturday, February 17th
9 am - Noon
Houston Audubon and SPLASh continue our long time partnership to clean up the Frenchtown Road area adjacent to our Horseshoe Marsh sanctuary. Cleaning this area prevents trash from migrating into Horseshoe Marsh, which helps keep the habitat safe for beach nesting birds!

Saturday, February 24th
9 am - Noon
February is a "twofer" for Houston Audubon and SPLASh! Right after the Frenchtown Road cleanup, the following weekend we will head to the Port Bolivar North Jetty for another day of cleaning up the beach. This is a great chance to see shorebirds as they are gathering for spring!

Meet us at this internationally known birding hot spot and help us beautify one of our 4 nature sanctuaries here, improving both the visitor infrastructure and wildlife habitat. This is a great opportunity to get outside while making a difference.

Outreach Assistance
Saturday, March 2nd
Shifts:
8:30am – 11:30am
11:30am – 2:30pm
Nature lovers of all ages are invited to the annual NatureFest introducing visitors to local environmental organizations, outdoor activities, and native plants and wildlife.
Houston Audubon will have a booth with various bird related activities and we need outreach volunteers to help! You can take a single shift, or come out for both depending on availability.
If you are interested in more information, please enter your info to be considered here.
Bird Surveys
Dates: TBD
Houston Audubon conducts bird surveys across the region. The volunteer leaders of these surveys engage participants of all birding skills, and it’s a great way to be introduced to the joys of birdwatching!
We are recruiting a new survey leader! The date and time are flexible but will need to be consistent. Birding and eBird experience are a plus; however, training is provided as part of onboarding.
If you are interested in becoming the survey lead for the Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve, please email gdurham@houstonaudubon.org
