CMU Portugal Academy opened its doors in Lisbon
The CMU Portugal Academy was launched at the event “Partnerships for Tomorrow’s Education: Building Future Jobs for a Digital Portugal” at the Unicorn Factory, Hub Criativo do Beato. Attendees included Portuguese Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation Fernando Alexandre; Santander Group's Miguel Belo de Carvalho; Inês Rocha de Gouveia from the Santander Foundation; FCT Vice-President Francisco Santos; and Instituto Superior Técnico President Rogério Colaço.
Applications are open to three advanced training programs: AI, Data Science, and Machine Learning; Product Management; and User Experience and Service Design. The deadline for applications is September 9, 2024 and each program has 30 available positions,supported by the Santander Portugal Foundation.

CMU Portugal launched “Patient Innovation Accelerator” with Nova SBE and Nova Medical School and FCT
NOVA Medical School and the Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE) signed an agreement with Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia to launch the CMU Portugal Patient Innovation Accelerator. The signing event, held at NOVA Medical School, was attended by FCT President Madalena Alves; National Co-Director of the CMU Portugal Program Inês Lynce; NOVA SBE Dean Pedro Oliveira; and NOVA Medical School Dean Helena Canhão.
This joint initiative marks a significant milestone in Portugal's healthcare innovation landscape, aiming to advance healthcare solutions and foster entrepreneurship in the sector. The launch coincided with the 2nd anniversary of the Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute and featured interventions by Nuno Jardim Nunes, Co-Director of the CMU Portugal Program, and José Fonseca de Moura, CMU Portugal Director at CMU (via Zoom).
Recently, CMU Portugal at CMU hosted the Pateint Innovation team including NOVA Medical School Professors Helena Canhão (Dean), João Conde (Vice-Dean for Research), NOVA SBE Pedro Oliveira (Dean), and Leid Zejnilovic (Director of the Data Science Knowledge Center at Nova SBE and CMU Portugal almun). The group visited Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh to explore partnerships with CMU’s Tepper School of Business and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy.

CMU Portugal Welcomes 14 Undergraduate Students from CMU Pittsburgh
On May 10th, the CMU Portugal program hosted a delegation of 14 undergraduate students from Carnegie Mellon University, representing various disciplines within the field of engineering, accompanied by Treci Bonime, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies, with CMU’s College of Engineering.
Following the networking lunch with CMU Portugal Ph.D. students and alumni, the delegation visited the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR) of Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, hosted by Alexandre Bernadino.

Acelera@UC distinguished Manuel Reis Carneiro for innovative idea developed under CMU Portugal Project
The CMU Portugal Dual Degree Ph.D. student in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UC and Carnegie Mellon University, presented one of the five winning business ideas “E-skins: Wearable bio stickers for long-term electrophysiology” based on results from the Large Scale Collaborative project WoW.
This follows his recent distinction in the 12th edition of ArriscaC, a business idea competition also promoted by Universidade de Coimbra. Manuel Carneiro, along with his Ph.D. supervisor Mahmoud Tavakoli and CMU Portugal researcher at FCTUC, Universidade de Coimbra, secured 2nd place in the Sustainability category.

CMU Portugal Visiting Scholar Alexandra Mendes won FLAD Atlantic Security Award
Alexandra Mendes, a 2023 CMU Portugal Visiting Faculty & Researcher scholar from Universidade do Porto (FEUP), has been recognized with the FLAD Atlantic Security Award, promoted by Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD).
The winning project idea emerged after her time at Carnegie Mellon University, visiting Professor Nicolas Christin at the Software and Societal Systems Department (S3D), where she came across a research project that analyzes fluctuations in prices in drug markets by analyzing dark web data.

In an interview with Lusa, Carol J. Smith, AI Division Trust Lab Lead and a Principal Research Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, expressed her perspective on regulating technology. While some argue for regulation, Carol emphasized the importance of prioritizing human rights and privacy in the development and deployment of technology.
Carol J. Smith was a keynote speaker, supported by CMU Portugal, at ICSE 2024, the international conference on Software Engineering, that took place in Lisbon.

In an opinion piece published by Expresso, Nuno Jardim Nunes offered a look into the growing apprehension and unease regarding large-scale language models (LLM) and their ability to potentially escape human control and develop autonomous, intentional behaviors.
“If the predictions are confirmed, we could be on the verge of a transformation comparable to the Industrial Revolution, or, to a lesser extent, the emergence of the PC, the internet and mobile computing”, shares the CMU Portugal’s National Director and Interactive Technologies Institute’s President.
