When you think of the best places to see fall colors, Great Basin National Park in Nevada may not make your list. Don’t let all that sagebrush fool you — Great Basin puts on quite the show.
Elevations within the park range from 6,195 feet at Snake Creek to 13,063 feet atop Wheeler Peak, Nevada’s second-highest mountain. That climb creates a surprising mix of landscapes, and from late September through mid-October, the mountains begin trading green for gold. Quaking aspens brighten the slopes, with occasional pockets of red and orange mixed in, and the landscape begins to look more like a watercolor painting than a Nevada desert.
There’s also Wheeler Peak Bristlecone Grove, where visitors can see the ancient bristlecone pine trees, reached by a 2.8-mile round-trip trail beginning at the end of Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. In fall, the drive climbs through vivid aspen groves, and the color continues along the trail. Golden aspens, green conifers, gnarled bristlecones, and a brilliant blue sky make the hike especially memorable.
Great Basin holds still more surprises, including the intricate formations inside Lehman Caves and some of the darkest night skies in the country.

Calling All Leaf Peepers! |
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its 2026 Fall Foliage Map and Forecast, which shows when peak leaf season is likely to occur across the U.S. based on historical foliage patterns. A handy slider bar lets you choose a date and see when color changes are expected in the areas you plan to visit.

| Generations of Family Camping |
Campfire Chronicles celebrates America’s love for camping. This film, launched to coincide with the United States’ 250th anniversary in July, draws upon historical archives and personal stories to trace the history of camping, from early expeditions and roadside travel to modern campgrounds and RV tourism. The film debuted this summer on local TV stations, with some showtimes remaining, and will be available for online streaming this fall.
