Luke 1: 26 - 38
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Do you have “Find a Friend” on your phone? It can’t help us make new friends. But if we have friends and they have their phones, we can find out where they are. This is how Melanie and I know that our kids have left their houses and are getting close to Houston. It is also how Melanie finds me when I go out to exercise in the park. God does not have this app, because he does not need it.

God will find us when he wants to find us. After Gabriel found Zechariah in the temple, he found Mary in the relatively obscure town of Nazareth. He greeted her by telling her she was highly favored because the Lord was with her. Mary was likely not expecting to be found. She wondered in fear. First the angel calmed her fears. Then he told her she was going to have a son named Jesus. Her son would be called great, the Son of the Most High, and his reign would last forever.

God was on the move. Literally, the Son was moving from heaven all the way to Nazareth. Jesus came into the world through a door marked, “No entrance.” Mary could not have a child except for God’s miraculous intervention. When she wondered how she would have a child, she was told, “No word from God will ever fail.” Later, Jesus would leave the tomb through a door marked, “No exit.”

Why did God choose Mary out of all the women who had ever lived? Her answer gives us a glimpse of her heart. She surrendered unconditionally to God’s will. She knew she was the Lord’s servant. “May your word to me be fulfilled,” she said.

One proviso about our Find a Friend app. It can be disabled. We don’t have to be found, if we don’t want to be. But God can always find us. When he does, will he find us in a posture of surrender or rebellion? Do not be afraid to surrender completely to God’s will today. He not only knows where we are, but he knows what he is doing. Trust him. Completely. Now.

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for Mary’s unique role in history. We believe that you can do anything but fail today. Find us in prayer today. Find us in surrender today. Find us in love with you today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals are in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
