FAMILY NEWSLETTER

Dear parents, families and friends of Northwood University,

My, how this semester has flown! Since our last update, your Northwood student has likely been busy with classes and other activities. We hosted family and alumni weekend, our 54th annual auto show, took back the "axe" in our cross-town rivalry "Axe Bowl" football game and hosted the generous donors of our many private scholarships at a luncheon just a few weeks ago. In this newsletter, you will find information on each of these events and more. As we prepare for the holiday season and wrap up this semester, I wish all of Northwood families a wonderful, joyous holiday!
Sincerely,
Sherri Riepma
Family Program Coordinator
Pictured above: Thirty-five Northwood University student-athletes from all varsity teams took part in a one-day leadership retreat at Eagle Village Retreat Center in Hersey, Michigan, in September. Student-athletes participated in various training exercises, including a classroom session, a mountain rescue site, and an indoor ropes course. Sessions allowed the student-athletes to build a better understanding of blending different personalities, abilities and effectively communicating to achieve team goals to understand their leadership roles on and off the playing field and in their careers beyond Northwood.

Semester in Review

There has been a lot of activity on campus this fall…take a quick look at a few highlights below. When you ask your student what’s been going on at Northwood, and they reply “nothing," you can be prepared with some topics for discussion!

Fall Lecture Series

Northwood University hosted a lecture series entitled “Forum for Citizenship and Enterprise," including one by Northwood’s own Professor Mariana Grigoras, who spoke on her thirty years behind the iron curtain.

Family Weekend, September 16-17

Saturday, September 16 featured a pre-football tailgate party, complimentary tickets to the football game, and free Family Weekend T-shirts. The Dow Commons Dining Hall hosted a family brunch on Sunday, Sept. 17, that featured an omelet bar, a beef carving station, and homemade Belgian waffles, among other delicious brunch items. If you missed this year's event, plan to join us next fall for Family Weekend!
Auto Show

Homecoming/Auto Show Weekend, October 7-8

Now in its 54th year, the Northwood University International Auto Show (NUIAS) continues to be a signature event for the university and the Midland community. This year more than 65 manufacturers and 500 vehicles were on display the weekend of Oct. 6, 2017. With the theme “Ignite,” the 2017 show attracted more than 60,000 visitors. An entirely student-run event, the teams manage everything from planning to logistics to booth design to visitor interaction. Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week, October 16-19

Students were able to try out "beer goggles" and participated in root beer pong tournaments all while learning about the affects of drug and alcohol use during Northwood's drug and alcohol awareness week.

Mannequin Night, October 17

Mannequin Night, organized by the students in the Northwood University Fashion Marketing and Management program, uses Northwood students as live mannequins to promote the businesses of Downtown Midland. The theme for this year’s Mannequin Night was “Fashion in Technicolor.” Click here to see more photos from the event.

Go M.A.D. Day, November 3

For more than 22 years, the late Coach Pat Riepma was a part of the Northwood University Athletic Department. From his time as the football program’s head coach to his role as athletic director, Pat was a kind and humble servant leader. He was a man who knew it took a team to accomplish anything worthwhile, yet impacted people one person at a time.  In doing so, he taught us each and every day to “Go M.A.D.” …Go Make a Difference! To honor Coach R’s legacy,  Northwood celebrates an annual day of service called “Go M.A.D.” Day.  This is a campus-wide event involving students, faculty, and staff, who volunteer to serve and meet the needs of the Midland community. For Coach R, “Go M.A.D.” was more than a saying; it was a way of life, and we carry on his mantra in his honor!”

Private Donor Scholarships, November 9

A special luncheon was held in November to thank our Private Scholarship Benefactors. This is a wonderful opportunity for our student recipients to meet and thank the people who invest in them financially. For more information on the Private Donor Scholarship program, please click here.
