ASUP Films x Moreau Center x Native American Alliance Club - 12/5
|
Join us on Thursday, December 5th at 6:30 PM in BC Auditorium for a screening of Fish War (2024) in collaboration with ASUP Films and the Native American Alliance Club. After learning about the history of indigenous fishing rights in the PNW on the Rural Immersion, our student coordinators wanted to bring this film to campus to share with our UP community.
“When the State of Washington made it illegal for tribes to fish for salmon in their usual and accustomed places, it was a declaration of war. Fish War follows the tribes’ fight to exercise their treaty-reserved fishing rights. A landmark court case in 1974 would affirm the tribes’ treaty rights and establish them as co-managers of the resource, but the fate of salmon in the Pacific Northwest still hangs in the balance."

"I came to college wanting to study and work, as a person with a marginalized background, in advocacy and policy change to target root causes of issues I’ve faced in my life; not letting all the struggle go to waste." - Shane Ruyle '26 |
| |
|
For the November Student Spotlight, we are highlighting Shane Ruyle, one of two Carceral Justice Immersion Coordinators!
Shane is a Junior Political Science and Social Work Major from LA and has been involved in the Moreau Center since his Freshman year. Shane started off in the Community Service Work Study program working with Because People Matter, and that same year, participated in the CORE (Community Organizing and Resistance) Immersion that took place in Detroit and Chicago. Shane continued in his Sophomore year working with Doing Good Things, and was the Student Leader for Bridge to Downtown (which had a similar focus to our Urban Immersion). Shane says that the CSWS program is such a great but underutilized opportunity; he feels really lucky to have been able to do the work he did for a nonprofit without taking any of their resources. Shane is now a Carceral Justice Immersion Coordinator, a role in which his duties include attending weekly office hours with his fellow co-coordinator and Erin, interviewing immersion participants, and cold emailing to make connections over in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. There are no existing partnerships for this immersion since it is the first of its kind!
Shane’s favorite thing about the Moreau Center is the friendships he’s made and relationships he’s built, especially with staff past and present. They are all cool role models to look up to and always make him feel heard. Shane’s ‘why’ for being involved in the MCSJ is “I came to college wanting to study and work, as a person with a marginalized background, in advocacy and policy change to target root causes of issues I’ve faced in my life; not letting all the struggle go to waste. I wanted to help in housing outreach while being someone in the room with a lived experience and stay connected to the basis on how I got here. Part of being in the Moreau Center is also working to make the institution better, holding it accountable, and being around people who want to and care about making changes even if they don’t quite know how”. Shane is excited about the new club on campus, the Disabled Student Union; they meet every other Wednesday. Make sure to check out their Instagram @uportland.dsu!

Civil Rights Immersion '24 Zine
Cris Diaz and Kaylee Gunderson, the co-coordinators of the Spring 2024 Civil Rights Immersion, partnered with Constructive Dialogues and the UP chapter of BridgeUSA on an event that brought BridgeUSA CEO Manu Meel to campus. Cris and Kaylee contributed by sharing with the group what they learned about the history and importance of voting rights while in the US South. They also created a zine along with the participants of the immersion, detailing their immersion and highlighting what they learned! Check out our Instagram for a digital version of the zine or stop by the MCSJ Community Center to check out the print version!

| Fall L'Arche Events
This semester, the Moreau Center partnered with L’Arche Portland, which is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities who share life together intentionally, to hold many fun-filled events on and off campus! This has included a Garden Work Party and Halloween Party at a local L’Arche home, Coffee and Prayer, and a Benefit Celebration for L’Arche on UP’s campus, which raised $60,000 for the L’Arche Portland community. We are so grateful for L’Arche building a kinder, more human world, and for the relationships built and fun times had this semester. Want to get involved? Come to our upcoming Christmas Party and share in community!
