| We were deeply troubled by the attack in Jersey City that left a police officer and three people at the local kosher supermarket dead. While the crime is still being investigated, it is clear that the shooters were motivated by their hatred of the Jewish people. We offer our thoughts and prayers to all who have been affected by this horrible event. If you'd like to contribute to the fund to support the victims’ families, please click here.

Our Added Value: A Message from Gil Preuss
I often meet with potential donors as part of my capacity as CEO. During both informal and formal meetings, I do my best to communicate the unique role Federation plays in the Greater Washington Jewish community and the value we add to people’s lives…and there is a lot to say! Perhaps my elevator pitch would be shorter if Federation had only one function or focus. But Federation’s agenda is truly comprehensive—we aim to serve as an instigator of vibrant and caring Jewish life in a decentralized, diverse, and evolving community. With your support, I have no doubt that our goal is possible.

Community Security Update
Recent violent and anti-Semitic events, locally, nationally, and around the globe, remind us to maintain heightened awareness and vigilance. In partnership with the Secure Community Network (SCN), Federation is working to ensure the safety and security of our community. We strongly encourage every Jewish organization to undertake a security risk assessment of their safety and security preparedness. Organizations should ensure that their security and emergency response plans are current and coordinated with local first responders. Members and staff should be briefed on those plans, and plans should be exercised or drilled where possible. If plans call for increased security presence or access control measures, now is the time to identify the resources needed to implement those measures. Individual community members, we encourage you to speak to the leaders of your synagogues and other frequented Jewish institutions to ensure they have a plan for what to do and how to respond in the event of an attack.

On December 3, as nonprofits worldwide celebrated #GivingTuesday, dedicated community members like you helped Federation raise nearly $110,000. Because of you, our Jewish future will be brighter, stronger, and more vibrant for years to come.

Seeking Big Ideas: How Would You Enrich Our Local Jewish Community?
In 2019, our inaugural innovation and impact grant cycle resulted in the investment of more than $1 million in some of the most innovative and impactful offerings ever implemented in Jewish Greater Washington. Our latest grant cycle has now begun, and Federation is currently seeking proposals for new initiatives (innovation) and/or expansion initiatives (impact)—including renewals from our 2019 inaugural grant cycle—to engage the next generation in Jewish life and strengthen Jewish life in Northern Virginia. We welcome multiple proposals and applications from individuals or collaborations between individuals and colleagues.

December Dilemma: Tips for Navigating the Chanukah-Christmas Overlap
This season has been called the “December Dilemma” because of the confusion children may feel when Chanukah and Christmas fall so close together. But confusion and anxiety may also occur in adults when issues of competing cultures arise. And with 53% of couples in the DMV reporting that one partner does not identify as Jewish, the pressure may be especially acute for local interfaith families.
