American Democracy on Trial
The servant leaders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church joined the nation in watching and praying as the impeachment trial for President Donald J. Trump began in the Senate on Tuesday, January 21st. We watched reasonable requests for evidence and key witnesses voted down by the Senate Republican Majority and heard the White House pushing for a quick dismissal of the to end the trial.

What has happened to freedom and justice for all? Sadly, we recognized that Democracy in the United States is on trial. Will the Senators choose liberty and justice for all, or will they choose the death of American democracy and the American Dream?

AME member Congresswoman Val Demings stated, "I understand that the politics of impeachment are difficult for many Senators. But I have not written off the Senate. Each Senator still has the power to do the right thing. I know that as each Senator considers whether to side with justice or corruption, the voices of the American people will matter."

It is telling that the impeachment trial starts the day after the National Holiday and Celebration of the Life and Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What Dr. King and most Americans value: truth, virtue, freedom, justice, and equality, are not valued by this President or the party he claims to represent.

The servant leaders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church call upon our members and all American citizens to:

1. Watch the trial and stay informed.
2. Pray that "justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream". Pray for those we elected to defend the truth in the US House and Senate.
3. Write and call your Senator's office and let them know you expect a fair trial. Be the voices referenced by Congresswoman Demings.
4. Make sure that you are registered to vote.
5. Organize your church and community for the upcoming series of elections. (use the AME V-Alert Toolkit).
