A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, this year’s National 4-H Week theme, "I Love 4-H,” reminds us that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us; and

WHEREAS, for 120 years, 4-H has served America’s young people to make the best better, and is now the Nation’s largest youth development organization; and

WHEREAS, 4-H programs are delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the Nation—that provide experiences for young people to learn by doing; and

WHEREAS, 4-H connects young people and adults to their communities, preparing them for work and life through experiential and inquiry-based learning while providing emerging research for positive youth development; and

WHEREAS, expanding from its strong agricultural roots, 4-H helps young people explore the world around them and grow into productive adults;

WHEREAS, supporting future leaders in science, agriculture, and community leadership is important for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture 4-H program; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, THOMAS J. VILSACK, United States Secretary of Agriculture, do hereby proclaim October 1 through October 7, 2023, as National 4-H Week, and call upon all Americans to learn more about and celebrate the 4-H program with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of September 2023, the two-hundred forty-seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America.

Club Happenings

Hyland Prairie (Harper Zillmer) Prior to the start of the business meeting parliamentarians Ella Fenske and Emily Schultz led an activity making trail mix in order to review how to make a motion.

County Line (Samantha Schwandt) Turkey Raffle tickets were handed out tonight. The turkey came from The Reed farm. Members talked about how their Fair week went and agreed it was a success.

Richwood Rangers (Samantha Zubke) Highway clean-up will be in October. The Siedschlag's officially retired as the club's general leaders today. Bill Meier takes over as general leader.

Fund Raising Opportunities for your club

We received a flyer from Arby’s informing us they are willing to do a fundraising 4-H Benefit Night for your club. Your club will receive 10% of the sales for a preset three-hour time frame. There are Arby’s located in Beaver Dam, Watertown, and Columbus. More details can be found on the Arby’s website

Also, a reminder that Culver’s offers a similar opportunity and so does Pizza Ranch. Contact your local restaurant of choice to learn more details.

4-H Leaders Celebrate Milestone

Anniversaries Dodge County 4-H Youth Development and the Dodge County 4-H Leaders Association recognize volunteer leaders (for their 5, 10, 15, etc. year anniversaries) who share their time and talents to make Dodge County 4-H such a successful program.

Anniversary pins are available upon request for eligible leaders who are celebrating a milestone anniversary. Pins are sponsored by the Dodge County 4-H Leaders Association.

Officers Training

Monday, October 23 at 6:30 pm, Dodgeland High School, Juneau.

Officers must register on 4-H Online - Events

This is a countywide officer training. All newly elected officers, as well as repeat officers, are encouraged to attend. The training will offer a general session for all officers and breakout sessions for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Reporters, and Other.

All educational meetings begin at 7 p.m. and run for about an hour. Educational meetings count as 1 point on the Livestock Project Member Activity Card (aka "the orange card).

New Newsletter Submissions Deadline

With the changes in staffing in the office, we are making some changes to the Friday Focus. If clubs or groups have items to share, send them by noon on Thursday to be included in that week’s issue. Anything received after 12 p.m. Thursday will be considered for the following week.

Want to help out with 4-H? Volunteer!

If you are 18 years or older and interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer, we can help. We will provide new volunteers with Volunteers in Preparation Training about how to work effectively with youth and what resources are available to volunteers. We will also ask you to participate in a Mandated Reporter Training to learn more about how to protect youth from child abuse and neglect. Finally, to ensure the safety of all youth and volunteers, a Volunteer Behavior Expectations Agreement and background check are required.

Depending on their role, some volunteers may be asked to complete subject matter-specific training as well as training to enrich their knowledge of youth development (for example chaperones or Shooting Sports leaders).

All volunteers, both new and returning, are also required to take training on how to report sexual misconduct. Answers to questions about reporting and training are available on our FAQ page.

Field Trip Opportunity

Fall is in the air, and we are so excited to offer a unique field trip experience again! Seeing your smiling faces brings smiles to our faces as we hear the laughter and see the little feet and hands explore the fall outdoors at Ebert’s Greenhouse Village. We are pleased to offer field trips for $8 per student and $6 per chaperone. Classroom teachers are free. The fee includes a hayride, a small pumpkin for students, a craft project, a story, and full access to our play areas. Although many ages enjoy the program and activities, it is especially geared toward pre-kindergarten to 3rd grade.

Ebert's Greenhouse Village Kid's Korner

Older Youth Leadership Opportunity & LEGOs too!

Do you love LEGOS? The Hustisford Community Library is seeking a 4-H Youth in grade 7-13 or a certified 4-H Volunteer to lead a monthly LEGO activity session on Wednesdays for 1 hour in September - November. The LEGO sessions are open to all community youth and the Library would love to have a 4-H Youth lead one, two or all three sessions. Attendees are typically youth in grades 5K-6. This is a great opportunity for older youth to demonstrate leadership activities on a resume, for scholarship applications, or in a 4-H Record Book.

WHAT: LEGO Building Activity Sessions - a 4-H Youth to lead a one-hour session
