Agency Update: NIH Advisory Committee to the Director June 2021 Meeting
| |
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) held a virtual meeting on June 10-11, 2021 to discuss programs and initiatives across NIH and hear updates from its various working groups. The most anticipated session at the meeting was a presentation from Dr. Eric Lander, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), on the proposed Advanced Projects Research Agency for Health (ARPA-H). In addition to discussions around ARPA-H, the ACD meeting provided updates on the current progress of COVID-19 programs, NIH’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts through the UNITE Initiative, and the agency’s efforts to redress harassment in biomedical research. The ACD Working Group on Enhancing Rigor, Transparency, and Translatability in Animal Research presented their final report and recommendations, and staff from the new NIH Common Fund program Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI) provided a summary of that program’s two open funding opportunities.
The attached document summarizes the conversations and expected impacts on the research community on the topics listed above, among others.

Dr. Tezcür, Professor and Jalal Talabani Endowed Chair of Kurdish Political Studies, received his B.A. in International Relations and Political Science from Boğaziçi University (Turkey), and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan. He joined UCF in 2015 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2018. He is a social scientist studying political violence, religious politics, democratization, and human security with a focus on Iranian, Kurdish, and Turkish human geography. He has authored more than two dozen scholarly articles that have appeared in high-impact journals. He is the author of Muslim Reformers in Iran and Turkey (University of Texas Press, 2010) and the editor of several books and volumes including Kurds and Yezidis in the Middle East (I.B. Tauris, 2021) and The Oxford Handbook of Turkish Politics (Oxford University Press, 2022). Dr. Tezcür's research has been recognized with a Research Incentive Award and the UCF Luminary Award. He has also received the College of Sciences Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award. Dr. Tezcür's leadership roles include serving as the Director of the Kurdish Political Studies Program and Coordinator of the School's MA Program.
The College of Sciences would also like to thank Dr. Kerstin Hamann, who has led the School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs for the past 10 years. During her tenure and leadership as Chair/Director, the unit has gone through significant growth and change, including the redesignation of the once Department of Political Science as the School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs. To support the growth of the School and its programs, Dr. Hamman created an additional staff position and reorganized the department's administrative structure, including the establishment of an undergraduate advising office with staff and peer advising. Dr. Hamann has strengthened the faculty, including hiring the first Endowed Chair in the College of Sciences. Dr. Hamann encouraged the growth of external funding through the establishment of an internal small grant funding program for assistant and associate professors.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Tezcür to his new role, and thanking Dr. Hamann for her dedicated service as School Director for the past 10 years.
