Tokens Show producer, Lee Camp, talks about "breaking down false dichotomies." I think that may be the intent of the tagline of a local private school for boys - "Gentleman, Scholar, Athlete". While I see an arts gap in their attempt to attach labels, why not the single label HUMAN? Genesis 1 tells us that not only did God create humans, but we are made in God's Image. We are all inherent creators made like the original CREATOR. So the question is not are our students scholars, or athletes, or artists, or whatever other label we might choose? But are they able to explore and become all that their creator has in store for them? Lipscomb has a long tradition of looking past those labels. We celebrate the artist who runs track, the football player in band, orchestra or chorus, and for those who are in multiple ensembles, play sports, make good grades and win academic awards and participate in plays, they are not just leaders, but SuperHumans!
Do they ever over-commit? Sure. But if they learn to manage their time now, how much ahead will they be than many of us adults who still struggle with juggling many responsibilities? Study after study shows that students who engage in fine arts score higher on standardized tests and often become the creative leaders in whatever profession they pursue.
