La Playa Stadium to undergo turf replacement

On Dec. 17, the SBCC Board of Trustees approved the move forward to replace the aging turf field at La Playa Stadium. Funding for the replacement had been earmarked earlier this year. Noting that the artificial turf is 11 years old — which is three years beyond its eight-year warranty and expected life span — Athletic Director Rocco Constantino said, “We want a facility that we can take pride in and one that is safe for our students and the public to use. Now we will be able to move in that direction.” Read the Noozhawk story...

Muna Malik’s “Blessing of the Boats” exhibition extended

The winter issue of SB Magazine featured an article about SBCC’s Atkinson Gallery exhibition of Muna Malik’s “Blessing of the Boats.” According to gallery director John Connelly, “Muna Malik’s imagery has the power to rally a diverse group of people around a clear message of unity, compassion and acceptance.” The exhibition date for the project was originally scheduled to end on Dec. 11 but has been extended through the Spring semester. Melissa Mathieson: “SBCC was life-changing for me”

While we usually feature stories about current students, occasionally we like to follow up on alumni to find out where their SBCC education has taken them. In the case of former art major Melissa Mathieson (class of 2017), it led to her graduation from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, followed by international recognition and a successful career as a creator of 3D art and animation. Read Melissa’s reflections on her SBCC experience...

Free food distribution expands to two days each week

SBCC’s Center for Equity and Social Justice is pleased to announce that it has expanded its food distribution to Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week at 2:30 p.m. Health and safety is a priority and all the proper precautions will be maintained. Free pre-packaged boxes of nonperishable foods and fresh produce will be available at the West Campus Parking Lot. A walk-up station is available for those with no access to a car.

Center for Equity and Social Justice offers CalFresh assistance

CalFresh is a federally funded food nutrition assistance program that helps income-eligible households — including individuals who are currently employed, unemployed or retired — to buy healthy meals. Benefits are given on Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), cards and can be used at most  grocery stores.
