Did you get to see B-Boy Jeffro in the breaking competition at the Olympics? One of my favorite memories at Tallowood was the day he and his family joined our church. I remember that day because it seemed like we had twenty or more people join the church in a single day. Many of the families had come to the United States from Haiti. I smiled when I saw his father bring more and more people from all over the world to our church. Jeffrey and his brothers often served as ushers in our church as they grew up. Along with their sister Jemimah, they have searched for and found God’s will for their lives. We rejoice with them!
When Paul stood on Mars Hill, he preached the resurrection at the crescendo of the message. To the Greek philosophers, resurrection seemed preposterous. Some of them came so close to entering the kingdom, but rejected Christ. Thankfully, some joined Paul as he left and believed. Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris chose to follow Christ that day, along with others.
Preachers rightly have no control over the response to our message. As we proclaim God’s word in worship and extend an invitation to trust in Christ, we never know who or how many will come. Christ alone can save. What sounds like foolishness to some becomes the power of God to save others (1 Corinthians 1:18). We are not responsible to get results. Our calling is to faithfully proclaim the crucified, risen Jesus Christ as Lord. Pray that many will respond to Jesus all around our city and in our church this Sunday. We never know what platform God may someday give them to live and share the truth about Jesus.
