Psalm 27:1-3
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked advance against me
    to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.

New International Version (NIV)
What do you hear when you read these words?  I can hear Robin Roewe’s beautiful and powerful voice resounding off the walls of cathedrals in Europe with majestic praise.  Cathedrals and voices were made for psalms like this.
Eugene Peterson says God’s people learn to pray by reading the psalms. David’s words remind us that our God is with us in ways that really help.  He provides light in our darkness.  I bought lightbulbs this weekend and wondered, “When did the price go up?”  In the heavenly city which will come down to the new earth, we will not need lightbulbs because the Lord, himself, will be our light.
God embodies salvation so that we need not fear.  The sound of rain reawakened the trauma of Houston residents a few nights ago.  A new pond formed in the field behind our house.  Chase’s dog who lives in our house sensed something in the midst of the bands of rain which fell from Hurricane Harvey.  She came inside and jumped up on a footstool and lay down.  Did she know the water was rising outside?   Instinctively she knew she needed to get higher.  So do we!  How do get out of the demoralizing despair and the paralyzing fear?  We go higher, to the Lord who is our light and salvation.
Evil comes in many forms.  Sometimes a natural disaster threatens our safety and steals our possessions.  At other times foreign leaders develop weapons and threaten the world by testing them.  David ran for his life more than once.  But he knew that his Advocate was greater than his adversaries.  He still is!
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for enough light to take the next step today.  Help us to experience the profound joy of the salvation we have in Christ.  Give us the faith to face our fears in the clear light of your promises to us.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
Joyfully,
