College students with intellectual disabilities (ID) can access many of the same resources as anyone else with ID. Whether you are thinking college or not, a variety of disability organizations are offering free classes this fall that cover resources available to adults with ID. These organizations are a wealth of knowledge on preparing for life after high school, and connecting adults to resources you might not yet know about.

Join IN! for a general overview of inclusive higher education in Colorado on September 15th from 12-1pm, October 13th from 9-10am, or November 4th from 6-7pm.

Or, join us on September 21st from 1-2pm to hear the results of our statewide needs assessment about barriers to college faced by students with ID.

Person Driven Planning

Speak Up Colorado is offering an exciting class for people with disabilities receiving Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) to learn to lead their own Person Driven Plan. This free class is specifically designed to support the participation of people with disabilities and to put their interests, growth, and experiences at the center of each class. The curriculum is designed as a 10-week course that will meet for 2 hours each week. There is an in-person option and a virtual option. It is open to anyone age high school and up. Classes start between September 10th and 22nd.

Students will learn to:

Identify their strengths and abilities
Develop a sense of Disability Pride
Create their own Person Driven Plan
Write goals and gather resources to achieve their goals
Problem solve
Communicate goals in a way that will support creating a life they love

Colorado Office of Employment First Upcoming Webinars

DB 101 Webinar

The Colorado Office of Employment First (COEF) is hosting an informational webinar on Colorado DB101 for families on September 21 from 6-7pm. DB101 is a new resource offering tools and information for career exploration and planning, health coverage options, and a benefits planning estimator for Coloradans with disabilities!

STEP UP! Into Life After High School!

This seminar series is conducted by the Arc of Arapahoe and Douglas Counties to assist parents and young adults with understanding resources and planning for life after high school. Young adults with IDD ages 15+, their parents, family members, educators, and care providers are invited to learn about these important topics. Two free sessions will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, Sept 22nd & 29th from 6- 8:15pm.

Topics include:

Person-Centered Planning
Private Insurance, Medicaid, and Waivers
SSI/SSDI and ABLE Accounts
Housing
Daily Life - respite, fun, and employment
Supported Decision Making and Guardianship

Project Independence

Project Independence, hosted by Thrive Center, provides two free strands of six 2-1/2 hour trainings to parents/caregivers of children and young adults with disabilities. The trainings will occur Thursdays between October 7th - November 18th from 6-8pm. One strand is for youth ages 14-21 years old and the other strand is for parents. The purpose of this project is for parents to understand their child's educational, developmental and transitional needs; and for youth to have the ability to self-advocate and discover what they would like to do after leaving high school.

aDuLtInG

A training by The Arc of Pikes Peak Region on general transition services, Social Security, Medicaid waiver programs, decision-making options, and resources. There are two Zoom sessions to choose from: September 15 at 10:30am or September 15 at 6:00pm.

Caitlin Brady Scholarship

Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition (CCDC) is currently accepting applications for a scholarship for students with disabilities, particularly those working on college paths related to social justice and disability rights; students who do not have a disability may also apply if they have a sibling or immediate family member who has a disability. The scholarship is available to current college students and/or college-bound high school seniors. Non-degree seeking students are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply is September 15th, 2021.

THINK+change is The Arc of Aurora’s virtual training and education program that strives to change knowledge, attitude, and behavior to ultimately improve the quality of life for people with IDD, their families, and the professionals in their lives.
