On Tuesday, I bit into a roasted brussels sprout and thought I was eating candy. The outside leaves were tart and crisp. The inside was soft, sweet and melted away. I immediately thought to myself, “This is so good, I could eat it for dessert.” My mom used to say that.
On Wednesday, I was wiping my counter with an old hand towel. It was so thick and cumbersome, I was making the counter dirtier than when I started. With scissors, I snipped it in the middle then tore it in two. The sound of the towel tearing released another cathartic memory. Ripping towels to make rags…my mom used to do that.
On Thursday, I decided to have a glass of wine while I was making dinner not caring that it was only 4:00 in the afternoon. I said to myself, “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” and toasted the air. My mom used to say that.
On Friday I heard a song with a mix of rock and gospel. I found myself moving my hips — a slight hip swing to the right with a little bounce then a slight hip swing to the left with elbows bent and hands swaying along. My mom used to dance like that.
On Saturday, it was my mom’s birthday. She would have been 93. I guess she was channeling me all week. Happy Birthday and Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.
To all the mother’s out there and to their mothers and their mothers and so on and so on: let their memories live on through us!

Playing tennis on a high school team.
Tennis, although an individual sport, has a team component especially if you play for your middle school, high school or in college. As a former professional tennis player and a NCAA Division I player, I loved competing on my college team at Temple University.
What does it take to make the High school team?
This depends on your individual school, but a player must learn to serve consistently and be able to maintain a rally of 6-8 shots to make the JV squad at most schools.
What skills do High school coaches like to see in their players?
Coaches like to see commitment to improvement during the season, as well as in the off-season. Typically, if a player is taking a private lesson with a qualified instructor once a week and playing another two days a week, they will see significant advancement. Talent is a minor attribute in a wide array of characteristics. The character of a player, the ability to stand up and lead teammates in achieving success, coach-ability, and reliability are great characteristics that coaches like to see in their players. I believe in life, as on the tennis court, our game is determined by our ability to serve well. The better the serve, the more skillful the player!
What kind of teacher should we look for?
Somebody who has a passion for the game and wants to inspire others with that same drive. Teachers should always lead by example and have integrity. Someone who has experience, motivation and compassion will most likely deliver a quality experience for your family. The best way to find a good teacher is simply by word of mouth.

| IMPORTANT MOMS FROM THE PAST
Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive
May 7th
The Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive honors the memory of Philadelphia area resident Carol Axelrod, who became dependent on blood products while being treated for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Because of transfusions, Carol was able to celebrate her 60th birthday and see her granddaughter turn 3 years old before she passed away in 2008. Carol’s family founded a memorial blood drive in her name with a mission of enabling other patients to spend more time with their loved ones by furthering understanding of the importance of donating blood. Join neighbors in saving lives while also supporting Radnor Fire Company/Radnor Ambulance and the Wayne Senior Center. For every unit of blood collected, Carol’s family will make donations to both organizations; if the blood drive collection surpasses last year’s total of 168 units, these donations will be doubled.

Gateways to Nature
Tyler Arboretum
Beginning May 11, Tyler Arboretum asks visitors to look at nature in new ways in its outdoor summer sculpture exhibit, Gateways to Nature. “With this exhibit we’re inviting visitors to join us on a sculptural journey around the Arboretum”, says Tyler’s Communications Manager, Gary Bloomer.
Karen Delaney is a featured artist in the exhibit, with one sculpture on view: Grand Arch (above). Karen Delaney has been a sculptor for three decades. She has an MFA from Radford University and has taught university level studio art and art history. She has exhibited internationally but finds the art community in our region to be inspiring and fulfilling. “My sculptures are a product of my fascination with the tensions and harmonies created by manipulating form, space, and line” says Karen. “I have endless ideas and am whole-heartedly devoted to expressing all of them in steel and other complimentary materials.” Karen makes sculpture and paintings in her West Chester studio and enjoys opportunities to show her work to the public.
