In honor of National Transfer Student Awareness week held each October, our most recent VOISES panel featured the experiences of transfer students at UNCG. Below is a summary of the major takeaways from the panel and how instructors can support transfer students throughout their academic journeys:
-
Transfer students are interested in completing a degree and where a course is within the plan of study in a department is important. It would be helpful to your transfer students if you are aware of where your class may align and how they may be able to continue to move forward through a discipline.
-
As Transfer students start in year 3 of a degree, they have not had the opportunity to build relationships in a department that non-transfer students have so are disadvantaged. They have a lot to learn outside of classes and need help and support in this area. The simple action of providing networking opportunities or providing resources for students to connect with on campus and in the community to help them build a strong support network community.
-
Transfer students see the value in external speakers. Inviting guest speakers provides students with access to other perspectives, adds variety and access to the different career pathways possible depending on degree level.
