Hi Neighbor!

Recently I had a senior moment, although I’m not that senior yet! Maybe it was a blonde moment, but I’m not very blond. Whatever it’s called, the other night I lost my car. I participated in Bryn Mawr Running’s Midsummer Night 5k Series. Excited about the great weather and the first of three races this summer, my friend, Nancy, and I didn’t paid attention to where I parked my car. When the race was over, sweaty and tired, we headed toward the car, each thinking it was in opposite directions! At first, we laughed off the fact that we didn’t recall where we parked. Armed with just my car key (I left my wallet and phone in the car, which, by the way, I tell my 18-year-old never to do), I felt stupid and helpless. “Keep clicking the clicker,” Nancy stressed as our tension increased by the minute. The sun was setting, it was getting darker, colder, and my thumb was aching from clicking. Just as we reached near panic mode a woman from the race pulled up in her car to ask if we were okay. Sensing our distress, she offered to drive us around to speed up the hunt. (Don’t tell your kids we took a ride from a stranger!) After a half hour of driving around the park neighborhood, constantly clicking the clicker, the lights of my SUV lit up and the search was over…more than an hour after the race ended!

I’m sharing this story because many people experience situations when they can’t remember where they parked their car, but also to share the story of a random act of kindness. The spontaneous help and caring attitude from Heidi, the woman who helped us that night reaffirmed my belief that people are generally good-hearted. In the hopefully-not-too-near future, I will probably lose my car again, but I will never forget Heidi’s unexpected, selfless generosity. And, now I have a new friend to run with and a funny story to retell about how we met!

Enjoy!

Beth
