2021 WI Corn Hybrid Performance Trials

Every year, the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the University of Wisconsin–Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences conduct a corn evaluation program in cooperation with the Wisconsin Crop Improvement Association. The purpose of this program is to provide unbiased performance comparisons of hybrid seed corn for both grain and silage available in Wisconsin. In 2021, grain and silage performance trials were planted at 14 locations in four production zones: the southern, south-central, north-central, and northern zones. Topics of discussion include the 3-year project of continuous: no-till, cover crops, and low disturbance manure application. In addition to this discussion, Dave Simon will be talking about his summer cover crop trials, and weather permitting, Chad Tasch will be applying manure using his low-disturbance toolbar.
Coffee and donuts will be available. The field is on the corner of W & Schumacher Rd in Calumet. We will be sure to have signs and staff out by the road.

Pest Management Update Meeting-Virtual

This year’s speakers include Mark Renz, Perennial Cropping Systems Extension Weed Specialist; Rodrigo Werle, Annual Cropping Systems Extension Weed Specialist; Nick Arneson, Weed Science Outreach Specialist; PJ Liesch Extension Entomology Diagnostician; and Damon Smith, Extension Field Crops Pathologist. Topics include updates in the area of weed, insect, and disease management and a panel discussion and Q&A regarding pest management challenges related to planting soybeans early. 
Registration for the virtual session includes links to pdfs of materials and a pdf version of the A3646 publication. In-person options have been canceled.

Heart of the Farm Coffee Chat: Tax Planning

2021-22 Coffee Chats will resume on the 1st Thursday of the month starting in December 2021 and running through February 2022.
Katie Wantoch, UW-Division of Extension, County Educator in Dunn County and representatives from GreenStone and Compeer Financial Farm Credit Service will discuss and answer tax preparation issues and concerns. As we all know, the month of January often brings thoughts of taxes and tax preparation. This discussion will focus on issues specific to farm tax returns so those listening may gain a better understanding of what to think about regarding farm tax preparation and be able to ask better questions with their tax advisor. 

Nutrient Management Training

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Nutrient and Pest Management Program is offering virtual training for farmers interested in writing their own nutrient management plans. This training will provide both the basics of nutrient management and an introduction to SnapPlus. Please register online at least three days in advance of the training date you plan to attend.
