The Michelson Prizes: Next Generation Grants are $150,000 research grants given annually to support promising researchers who are applying disruptive concepts and inventive processes to advance human immunology, vaccine discovery and immunotherapy research for major global diseases.
The 2021 Michelson Prizes will be looking for research proposals in two areas:
1. Human Immunology and Vaccine Research
2. Climate Change and Human Immunology

UPDATE: Biowaste CollectionThe autoclaves used to process biohazardous waste from the hospital and research labs in VUMC buildings have been removed and replaced with a new Sani-Pak autoclave system. The new system has many advantages over the old system including a safer, more ergonomic process for collection personnel, more efficiency, and more throughput. Starting the week of April 5th, SOM EVS will begin the transition from the current biohazardous waste procedure to the new Sani-Pak procedure.
Here is what this means for you:
- 96-gallon Sani-Pak Collection Carts are being placed in centralized areas, such as autoclave rooms or common equipment areas. There will be future communication with the exact location of the collection point for your lab space once everything is in place.
- When the Collection Points are operational, lab personnel will take their sealed biohazardous waste bags to the Collection Carts and place them inside for disposal. SOM EVS will then take the Carts to the Sani-Pak autoclave for processing and place a new Cart in the centralized area.
- Sharps containers will NOT be placed in the Sani-Pak bins. Sharps containers should be sealed and placed by regular trash containers.
- Once a Sani-Pak Collection Point has been established in your area and sufficient time has passed to ensure that the new process is working smoothly, direct pick-ups of non-sharp biohazardous waste from laboratory spaces will stop.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
- When transporting biohazardous waste, a secondary container is required.
- All bags MUST be closed with a single knot or two zip ties.
- A cart that holds the secondary container is strongly recommended.
- Proper PPE should be used during the transport of biohazardous waste.
- Sharps containers are NOT part of the Sani-Pak system! Those containers must be sealed properly and staged next to your regular trash. They will be processed separately.

Emergency Use Ultra Low FreezerThere is an ultra low freezer for emergency use available to the department. If a laboratory has a freezer failing they can contact Starr and Stephanie to sign out the freezer and to gain access!
