FEBRUARY 2022
Houston Audubon’s vision of leading and nurturing a community that values and supports birds continues to sprout—fueled by our volunteers, partnerships, and programs that connect people to nature and bring communities together. This February we are thrilled to welcome our impressive 2022 young professionals, honor Winnie Burkett as our 2022 exceptional volunteer, and recognize all the dedicated volunteers that make it happen every day. We are also very pleased about our partnership work in two new communities—the Nature Heritage Society in Sunnyside in South Houston and the Galveston Bay Area Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists at Bayside Regional Park in Bacliff. We look forward to seeing you throughout the year birding, volunteering, or attending one of our many events or programs!

AROUND OUR SANCTUARIES

Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary

There are so many improvements happening at Edith L. Moore! We're clearing trails, rebuilding and repairing boardwalks, and generally sprucing up the sanctuary for wildlife and visitors. Even though it is still winter, spring is peeking around the corner and we are planning bird walks, native plantings, and more volunteer workdays!
Don't have plans for Spring Break? Enroll your kids in Pokebon Spring Break Camp from March 14-18. Pokémon fans ages 7-11 will explore the unique ecology of our world through by earning badges, playing games and creating Pokémon crafts.
Other events happening at the sanctuary include Guided Tours, Friday Night Hikes, Mindful Mornings in the Forest, and more!

Raptor and Education Center

In the coming weeks, our new “top of the forest” scout deck will be completed and it will provide great views of Sims Bayou and the forest. Thank you to Morgan Kuo, who is earning his Eagle with this project.
Maggie and Bob Honig were finally able to visit the recently dedicated Honig Pond, which has seen an abundance of Southern Leopard Frogs since the pond was renamed in their honor.

If you're interested in volunteering to help get the gardens ready for spring, please contact Mary Anne  Weber at maweber@houstonaudubon.org.
There are always lots of fun activities happening at the Raptor Center, such as Owl Prowls, Guided Tours, Raptor Photo Shoots, and more! Or, you can visit for as little as $5 (free for members) and explore on your own!

High Island and Bolivar Flats

Habitat restoration continues at Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary. Visitors this spring will enjoy much more open views around Grackle Pond. Staff and volunteers have been busy clearing trails and getting the sanctuaries ready for the birds!
Permits are being acquired to restore the vehicular barrier at Bolivar Flats to better secure the mudflats from vehicle traffic. A large fire occurred last month at Mundy Marsh. Though this fire was caused by fireworks, fires are part of the natural ecosystem cycle, clearing dead vegetation and priming the soil for new growth.

Volunteers needed for spring migration! If you're interested in helping visitors find their way and spot birds on the Canopy Walkway at Smith Oaks this spring, join our upcoming High Island Volunteer Training on February 10!
